when you turn the key does it turn over fine but refuses to start? Almost like it tries to start too soon? Mine does the same.. Possibly the starter?

Hot start problems can sometimes be a telltale sign of the MAF sensor going bad.

I agree with Chibi, could be the MAF. Next time it happens, unplug the MAF and try to start it.

It could also be a failing crankshaft position sensor

There are a few things it could be. As stated above by other people it could be MAF sensor or crankshaft position sensor. I have also seen fuel pumps cause a similar concern.

wonder if it could have a tuned pcm under there and he not know it? always a possibility. where are you located? there could be someone near by with a tuner that can scan your car and look for issues there and tuning can fix start up issues easy.

If you unplug the MAF it will use old data, but your car should start easily and you'll know the MAF is bad.

I'm gonna go with the fuel regulator going out. My car has a little hiccup starting sometimes and my step mothers 02 Impala had the same issue, we replaced that (about an $80 part) and wa-la - fixed. I plan on doing the same thing here soon.
