Angry Spark plug BOOTS !!!

WOW!

What do I have to do to get these boots off the plugs?! I am afraid that if I yank any harder I will pull the wires right out the back of the boot!

Ugh!

Frank ,That's what happens most of the time...
When you replace the plug wires use dielectric grease ..

Try some spark plug boot pliers and then grease them up after.

I pulled my wires out of the boots and just put them and the metal piece back in and ive been running with them for over 9k miles... I used some channel locks to grab the metal boot retainers and pulled mine straight out, dont pull at an angle or anything just straight back.

This is what I use, but if you don't have any a regular pliers will work. Those metal protectors can be a real PITA, but grab the boot as close to the base of the spark plug as you can, twist then pull straight back. Be careful so the pliers don't tear the boot!

Normally when I change plugs, I change wires (they age due to heat and do not last forever). Some extra grease from the factory would be nice.

My problem with those boot covers is that I'm used to grabbing the rubber boot and twisting it, you CAN'T grab the cover and twist as it does not grab anything and very little of the boot sticks out). Last time I used vice grips to get a tight grip on the boot sticking out from the cover, twisted it all the way (broke it free from its bond on the plug) and pulled/tugged it right off.

I'd still plan on replacing the wires. In the best of conditions, the connectors sometimes pull off anyways.

That's were a spark plug boot pliers comes in handy. The tapered design and curved tips fit between the boot and the metal shield allowing you to get almost all the way to the base of the ceramic on the spark plug. If you do tune ups to multiple vehicles or for a living they are definitely well worth the invesment.
