Shift Points and Rev Limiter
Hey all I was wondering on an 01 Monte SS what would be optimal shift points for fuel mileage and acceleration. Thanks!

For fuel mileage you should never get over 2k rpms.
For acceleration on a stock valve-train you can only go up to 5900 RPM. |
I saw a pcm that altered it for a 6k shift instead of stock 5,800. what mods for that?
|
A tuned pcm would get you to 6k.. don't really need mods
It will just be harder on the engine and the trans and these transmissions are already weak. |
If you take the shift points higher than 5900RPM you NEED new rockers and valve springs, or else you will just be getting valve float.
|
I'm pretty sure mine's above 5900 and i don't have any issues
|
Right now I'm getting around 22-23 mpg around town and my tach is usualy around 2K until 45mph then it drops to 1.5K.
|
Is that normal? When I'm going 60ish on the highway I'm around 2K on the revs.
|
the engine is balanced for up to 6300 rpm's in stock form, i run mine up to 6250 with my L67 with 1.8 roller rockers and stock springs, and i didn't have valve float till 6700 on my l36 with stock rockers but running past 6300 will cause accelerated bearing failure... which didn't affect mine as it hydrolocked from that POS intake manifold before the bearings got a chance to die.
in stock form the stock shift points are near perfect, but if you add an hv3 and headers and a catback, the powerband is extended beyond the stock safe area... i will say that when i had my hv3, headers, catless catback, intake, l67 tb, and my tune, the car pulled like hell up to 6600 from around 4500 rpms (like vtec, but better cuz it's not honduh haha) |
I would NEVER tell ANYONE with a stock valve-spring to go above 5900RPM.
There is a reason that is the red-line on a stock car. |
