Default Rough Starting

Here is some background information.
Car has a p0102 code. MAF sensor has been replaced and the codes cleared. Comes back within a few minutes.

There is a air seeping/sucking sound coming from around the area of the manifold to exhaust connection. Can it really trigger the MAF?

When I start the car it starts and the revs instantly fall to almost 0 and then they go up and everything sounds normal. Sometimes they do not rise back up fast enough and the engine dies.

Thoughts?

Did you replace with an oem maf? our cars don't like anything but and will cause you problems if you don't go with factory.

If there is an air leak you will also have problems as it is designed to be an enclosed unit but I don't think the manifold leak would cause the MAF problem, although I could be wrong.

Check the wires on the MAF unit as they get old and brittle and can break causing it to not read the sensor which would also throw the code.

Easiest test to check the maf is to unplug it and start the car if it runs fine then it is the MAF sensor not doing it's job.

Here is a link to another thread where a member was having a similar problem as yours, it mentions that it could also be the crank position sensor or the IAC sensor being gummed up preventing the car from operating properly, but the thread has a good pic in it that shows where everything is located which may help you out.

Is you air filter in a clean condition. Mine was semi-dirty and throwing 0102 low voltage, removed, cleaned the filter and it runs proper now. I have the ABACO digital air meter, kind of sensitive critter.

Yes all air filters have been replaced.
Yes it was a OEM MAF sensor that I took off another car. I will unplug it and start the car and see what happens. Will report back soon.

Take out the air filter and se how it runs... Runs good, then you know your new filter is defective...

Thanks to you guys I only have 1 issue left(That I can see) and its the biggest one.

The rubber peice with the 2 evap hoses keeps blowing off or blowing up when the engine starts sometimes, Ideas?

There are no trouble codes except the mass air flow sensor which is related to this problem in some way I guess.

Changed a bunch of stuff, but it sounds like it choking and then I hear it sucking in more air. I changed the MAF 3 times already. Any ideas? Whats the ideal idle speed when I start up the car? I hook up my Diagun and it says 756..., if I raise the idle to 1000 it sounds fine. Ideas?

Jake, those evap hoses are vacuum lines. If they leak it will throw P0102 code. They could be blowing off due to a clogged or bad PCV valve. Also check: 1.objects blocking the MAF sensor inlet screen
2.vacuum leaks around the intake manifold
3.vacuum leaks at throttle body
4.vacuum leaks at the EGR valve and flange.
5. Clogged throttle body screen
Hope this helps.
