What parts are interchangable between the two? Never heard that.

Just out of curiosity.... The new v-8 engines found in a 06-07 monte, can one of those engines be dropped into a 2000? or would that be a waste of time and a lot of hard work?
Yes, it can be done- and yes it will be a lot of work (not necessarily in the swap, its going from a wbody to wbody- but its getting all the kinks of the swap worked out since so few have been done).

I'd personally say if you have a 3800 in the 00, I'd do a turbo or a top swap if you want more power. If you have a 3400- I'd swap a supercharged 3800. You could do the engine/trans swap and a bunch of mods for just the price of an LS4. Plus if you go with either version of the 3800- it will be a direct drop in and plug in- all the kinks are already well known since its so common.

An LS4 would be different, but you're going to pay in time it takes to do the swap and in the extra money. If you're just worried about the power gain, you can get the same 300 horsepower out of a 3800 fairly easily.

I think it would be a waste for an engine with only 300hp and almost no aftermarket.
Only 300? If he has a 3400, thats almost double the power.

Also, the engine does have a good amount of aftermarket- you have to remember that its essentially an LS2; so the bulk majority of LSx mods can work (the obvious exception being cranks and front end accessories). Heck, the bolt on turbo kit alone does almost 500whp. I think once people's powertrain warrantys start expiring more and more on the LS4 cars, that you'll begin to see people start to experiment with more hardcore setups. Really about the only aftermarket mod I can see that the LS4 is missing that it desperately needs is headers- but any decent fab shop can make a set- it uses regular LS head flanges.

What I always wanted to do was drop an LS1
Why do the LS1, when the LS4 is essentially the same thing- except already set up for FWD?

I think swapping for an LS4 isnt cost effective when you can make the same power out of an L67 or L36 for alot less money.
I definitely agree that at the current going rate of an LS4/4t65HD- that it is far more expensive than an L67 swap- but if one could get a good deal on an LS4 setup- I think it would make an awesome, unique project.

I saw one on ebay for 700 with the trans. I have 1.8 roller rockers heads ported intake and TB ported and polished CAI Magnaflow exhaust, as well as Taylor 409 10.4 MM Turbo and trans up grade next

just fti the 5.3(with tranny attached) out of the 06-07 monte is 2300 with 50k miles and 26 with 30k those are the only 2 i found and that was on ebay abit ago so figure about 2800 for the motor and tranny combo.

Not sure the price but I was figuring the turbo for the 3.8 may be the cheaper option.

no tranny attached on that one mel

I found a turbo kit wondering which one is needed for the 03 3.8 and whats the cost of this kit vs the 5.3 install. I know the 5.3 probably has not been done and i have time ot plan it.

My plan is to wait the current motor out and buy a block and build a 3.8 just for the turbo with cam and boosted compression.

Because I've heard the LS1, and I've heard the LS4, LS1 has the very unique sound to it, you can't get that same sound from an LS4. I'm never going to do it, it's just me wanting an LS1 Camaro and not having one.

For a 3800 turbo kit- I would go to www.zzperformance.com they have 3 different kits depending how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go:

Z3
Z8
Stattama

As far as vs the price for a 5.3 swap, thats impossible to tell- since so few have been done, its hard to say exactly what mods will need to be done, and the price of the powertrains varies quite a bit.

You can get them to sound practically identical- because they are virtually the same engine (just like an LS2, LS6, etc all sound about the same). The reason the LS1 vs LS4 sound so different is because of the exhaust routing on the FWD LS4- and how it has the crossover that combines into one manifold, and goes into a single downpipe and such. If you were able to replicate the exhaust style you liked on the LS1's you've heard (be it true duals or whatever style)- you could make the LS4 sound similar. Plus, if you swapped in an LS1 FWD, and you used the LS4 exhaust manis and downpipe, etc for your exhaust system- then it would take on the odd LS4 sound.

Okay wow, you clearly know way more about engines. I'll take your word for it.
