Default knock - KR & high octane fuel

Locally I found 102 high octane UNLEADED fuel; (in my area, the best fuel I can get is 91 octane, pure gas, with No ethanol)

I have little to no knock with my current 3.1 pulley; dropping to a 3.0 pulley produces quite a bit more Knock Retard

If I blend the 102 unleaded to raise my fuel octane to say 94; will that reduce KR or have no effect ???

Anyone tried this before??

Mixing Gas to get 93 Octane - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums - Camaro5.com (the pic in the 1st post is accurate for mixing; 111 octane is leaded and I will NOT use that)

Higher octane does reduce knock. I doubt it will help you run that 3.0 safely, unless you're only seeing 3* or so.

Just give it a shot man, if it still knocks switch the pulley back.

I'm planning on going to the track with less than 1/2 tank; I'll make a few runs on the 3.1 pulley, which I have scanned and usually has 0 KR, but when hot, I have seen 1, to 1.5 KR on the log;

I'll mix 2.5 gal of my 102 unleaded with the 6 gal of 91 to get up to 94 octane; I'll drop to a 3.0 and make a few passes to see what KR is, if KR is high, I'll burn a little fuel and then add the next 2.5 gallons to get me up to 96 octane; I'll make a few more passes, save the scan logs & report back hopefully it doesn't rain :-(

Is 1 too 1.5kr really that bad? I know closer too 0 is what you want but would that low of kr really hurt anything?

1° of KR can pull a good amount of timing depending on the tune. Even a little bit can be dangerous at higher HP levels

Ideal is 0* of course. I get blips of knock (1.8* is the highest I've seen it recently), usually right before or after a shift.

KR means you're getting detonation in the combustion chamber, which is bad. The knock sensors will pull (or retard) timing when detonation occurs. The more KR you have, the more detonation you're having. Example: if you get 2* of knock, the PCM pulls 2* from your timing for a certain amount of time to protect the engine.

The more mods you have, and the smaller pulley you have, can result in a busted piston even with only a degree or two of KR. Nobody has cracked a piston on a stock pulley though, FWIW.

Ace - be careful, if the knock gets too high on your run, don't be afraid to let off the gas.... Better to run a slower time than blow that engine with all that work done to it.

Perhaps a water methanol system is in your future. I believe this would go a long way to prevent detonation. I run the Cooling Mist brand in my Monte

Stage 1 Trunkmount (solenoid and super atomizing inj)

I really dont much of anything about Turbo powered motors....

Would hyper cooling the fuel before it enters the cylinder help to alleviate any spark knock/detonation with a turbo? would that help to reduce the "KR"?

Before anyone gets all butthurt, I really stopped caring about my car at a certain point. When I chipped a piston, I literally wanted to see how much knock my car could take with the missfire and all. I would see close to 10* of knock pretty often, for 40k miles.

I was well past the 10* limit I could see on HPTuners at the bottom of 2nd, and when it chipped I was going uphill at the top of 3rd hahaha.

What does this have to do with anything? 1* of knock isn't awful, but you will see a tiny bit of power loss.
