Default Engine swapping.... (not your average swap thread... ;) )

so, ive been thinking, Im not going to afford a swap withing a year or so at least, so why not be thinking long term... whats the largest engine we could drop in without having to cusotm fab too much? Think we could get a v-8 to work in out 6th gens? what would all have to be fabbed up with any of the choices?

the 5.3L should work with a transmission shift kit... our a supercharged 3.8 will work out pretty well if you do the right mods, theres alot out for them. the cadillac northstar isn't any quicker than a lightly modified supercharged 3.8... so i'd say that.

3.8 is the largest standard 6 cyl. you can fit. The 4.3 is a 60* block and can't clear.

You can get a NorthStar in, but you really have to shoe horn it. The 5.3 can be done as well, but there is ALOT of electronics work to be done.

Your smartest bet is doing the L67 Swap.

awesome... thats what I needed to know. how much can you usually find a l67 for from the yard? I mean, granted, I know its not a plug and play job for a swap, and I do not plan on doing it myself for a WHILE yet... but, how much does a engine and possibly tranny go for?

I've seen people pay as little as $500 for a complete powertrain (L67 + 4t65hd), and I've seen pay up to $2500 back in the day. They're so common that its not hard to find them- but it is tougher to find one with decent mileage that hasn't been raped on (which is extremely hard to tell from it sitting in a j/y).

I personally got a complete 98 gtp for $1500 (it was totalled on the side), which wasn't a bad price the 3 or so years ago when I got it.

Its a lot more plug and play than you would think. It physically bolts in (being a 6th gen you could probablyuse a production 04 ss sc passenger side axle instead of a custom one like the 5th gens do). Also, you should only need the engine bay harness from a monte similar to yours with a 3800 (na is fine), and just buy the $20 L67 swap wiring conversion kit (its just a bbv plug/wire and a map relocator wire- you can get it at zzp), and you're basically done. There is a little more than that, and I don't know the specifics on the 6th gen myself- but its reallya very easy swap.

I would say its a million times easier than trying to squeeze a v8 in there.

Just wondering here.

If your Monte has a n/a 3800 would the 3900 be a better choice for swapping in? Not a lot of aftermarket as of yet for the 3.9 but that should change as long as Chevy keeps using the engine.

Would there be less to swap in by using the 3.9 versus say a supercharged 3800?

Anyone know if this is a better idea compared to the superchanrged 3.8?

I would say 99-03 on the gtp would be best. 98 would be ok, I'd avoid 97s and 04+. A regal GS, park ave, bonneville ssei all will work too- but GTP's seem to be the most common and easiest find.

The 3.3L is a 90* engine like the 3.8, however I'm pretty sure its based off the series 1 3800 instead of the newer series 2 3800s like you'd find in the cars I listed above. I wouldn't even think about using anything off a 3.3L.

The 3.8 supercharged needs to have 3.8 supercharged heads- you can't go swapping series 1 and 2 heads- and you can't even use normal NA 3800 heads on a 3800 s/c.

Your best bet is just to take the entire powertrain out of the donor car (ie engine/trans/accessories/etc) and just swap it as a unit.

If your Monte has a n/a 3800 would the 3900 be a better choice for swapping in? Not a lot of aftermarket as of yet for the 3.9 but that should change as long as Chevy keeps using the engine.
No. If you have a n/a 3800, do a top swap or do a turbo- you'll blow away a stock 3900 car. Look at www.wbodystore.com under the supercharger section- they have a complete 'top swap' kit to make your car supercharged without having to pull the engine/trans for a swap- and for way cheaper too.

Your other option is to go to www.zzperformance.com and look at the engine section- buy either their Z7 kit or the stattama turbo kit. Its a little more pricey than an engine swap- but you'll destroy any 3900 I've ever seen.
