egr removal?
what would happen if i removed my egr on my 96 monte? it has the dohc LQ1

Your engine bay would look better. Thats it though.

would it affect my gas mileage/horsepower in any way? or affect my driveability

I think gas mileage goes down mabye 1-2 mpg. Good luck trying to get the block off plates on though, ugh.

Enzo's right. You will make the engine bay look better, there will be no gain in hp, and you might lose 1-2mpg. Realistically people remove their egr valve to make the engine bay look better. And I suppose the weight of your car would go down a pound or two :D

I guess the big question is- why are you asking? If you think you'll gain power by removing it- you won't (assuming your system is functioning properly and isn't leaking)- it closes at WOT and idle anyways.
If you think you'll gain gas mileage; you won't do that either. Sending a relatively inert gas mixture (along with some excess unburnt fuel from incomplete combustion) back into the cylinders means the engine doesn't need as much new fuel- saving you gas. Removing EGR will hurt your part throttle fuel economy (I lost about 2-3 MPG city on my GTP). Only real benefit I see is aesthetics/weight on a show/drag car, and keeping the engine's inside a little cleaner (you could always run seafoam or something through regularly to keep it clean). The other thing to think of is the pcm- you need some kind of tuner or programmed PCM to keep the code from coming on (unless you can find an EGR simulator for your engine)- otherwise you'll end up with a permanent SES light. |
thanks. reason i was asking is bc my mother has a gmc jimmy with a 4.3 vortec and it acutally ran better without it. but idk.
