ok so i got a pre 86 350 from a freind to put in my 1988 monte carlo. I have changed engines before so it will be some what easy but have a few questions. I know at some point there changed the engines a bit. The 350 i got is just the block and heads. the starter alternator ect is not there. He said i could use everything from the 305. Is this true or not what will fit on and what wont

 

From my experience, most small block chevy engines are pretty similar. You may be surprised on how interchangable the parts between the two engines are. I would look to make sure the mounting holes for the accessories are in the same locations. If you can bolt the accessories on, I see no reason why you couldnt use them.

 

There should no reason why the acc from the 305 couldn't fit a 350. We dropped a 305 into my brother's 65 Impala when he grenaded his 327 and i dropped a 383 Stroker when the 283 finally retired into my 60 Apache.

I say GO FOR IT.

 

was talking to a guy today that said the only differnt things that would not work on the older 360 would be the intake bolt pattern changed? and the fly wheel ? can anone conferm this please. Want to get anything i need before i take my engine out. My 305 is a 88 and the 350 a pre 86. Yep the 4 center intake bolts are at a different angle, and the flexplate for the trans is going to be different. The 88 is a 1 piece rear main and the older 350 will be 2 piece

 

you could take everything from the compuer controlled carb and all those goody's it has been done i think there is even a write up in montecarloss.com and make it work with the 350 or you can be like me and get a non cc carb(q-jet(direct bolt on)or holly,edlebrock,ect( with a adapter plate or new intake)
a vacume advance dist base
buying a trq con lock out kit or wiring one up yourself(just gotta remeber to turn it off)

for the tranny to work??. Could I just install a older tranny instead and not do this

 

Yes you may even be able to get a trq converter from an older tran and be able to avoid the lock up issues but if u do everything to keep the comp and whatnot you wouldn't need to worrie about it

 

o and it doesn't need to be done but your miliage will suffer and trany will go sooner

 

thanks for the help i wont be changing the engine for a couple weeks i might just look around and see if i can get a rebuilt tranny, as mine's not the best anyway
