Check your brake fluid.

BRAKE means your fluid is low, get some dot 3 and take the cap off slowly (clean the cap down) and put your fluid back to the max line. It's possible that your brake pads are starting to wear very thin if the light came on and you aren't leaking fluid (as thinner brakes have to travel more and use more fluid)

ABS/TRAC OFF, will usually mean a sensor is going bad in a wheel hub, or a ground wire is dirty. Check all connections

Like chibi said, it could be a bad sensor in the hub. Good luck to you.

that light will also come on if your parking brake is on or if the switch on it is slightly pressed

Recently went through this, car shuddered after backing and steering to the right to go forward. After doing some searching here and other places, decided to replace my hub assemblies and brake pads. The brake pads for another reason. Did both hubs. As I have seen here and other places, people said don't go cheap, or you will end up with a redo later.
O.K. I'll try to keep this short, and convey pertinent info.
The mech I use works for a national brand that does brakes, shocks, exhausts, etc. Pretty good at mechanical things, don't know if I would let him change a fuse though, lol. Anyway, his recomendation was for higher quality parts as he had had someone with similiar problem go cheap on the hubs and was back within a few weeks with same problem again. This got me to thinking. I did some more net searching. I have found that a lot of people with Impala's have this same problem, but they have found that it is not in the hub assembly, but in the wiring from the hub to the trac control system, moisture causing wirwing problems. I hope thats not the case with mine. Just something to consider

I also wanted to add that it can be a problem with the ABS/Trac control system itself. If you know a good mechanic, they should be able to diagnose the problem by doing an electrical check on the system.
