Bad Week !!!!! Need Help Bad !!! SS acting up
Hello people on monday I had a new Exhaust Manifold put on my 02 SS by a local shop went to drive off the car started jerking pretty bad wouldn't even go into 2nd. Made a u-turn back to the shop guy says that I need a Ignition coil they put that on the car then take it for a drive around the block then they say I need new plugs & wires and a fuel filter. On my way to work today starts acting an ass going up a hill the car wouldn't switch into gears right then the check engine light started blinking but wouldn't stay on. Then on a flat straight shot when I mash on the gas it wouldn't change gears it would rev up to 4,000 RPM's then I would have to let of the gas a little for it get to back down to 2,000 RPM's then it would switch gears ok but once I put it on cruise control on the highway its fine for a bit them bam it will jump all the way up to 4,000 again ! Has anybody out there had this problem ?

i had the same thing happen in my truck my 99 ram 1500. went to go on the highway and sarted to get up there and truck start chuggin not switchin gears let off gas ran fine put on gas eninge light flashed and flashed at me took it in the shop found out it was a fuel pressure regulator and got it replaced problem was fixed maybe the same? not sure just sounds like what i wen tthru in my truck

Thank u back to the shop I go in the morning ! MPG went down from 25 to 16.5 !
|
most times thats one of the common issues with the regulator that and stalling and such no problem. hope it helps, hopefully thats right, nice car by the way. signin off for the night
|
Thanks take it easy !

It is your catalytic converter. I just had the same symptoms and it acted the same as yours. The rest of the stuff they did was a waste of money.:(

CAT for sure

First, I'm curious why did the exhaust manifold need replaced (or was it just the gasket for the manifold)? The stock manifolds don't really go bad from what I've seen.
My guess would be a potential bad CAT (agreeing with a coupld others that have chimmed in). Sounds like it's not flowing exhaust out like it should and sometimes it does. BUT, before dumping ANY money on it, you mentioned the check engine light flashed on. This means an internal diagnostic failed on the car and the computer has some data stored regarding what happened. From what I've seen, most cheap ODB-II scanner read current and history codes. I found messing with a Snap-On Scanner is can read current and history codes BUT can read other code storages on the car, such as last code thrown, last code thrown since last cleared, and codes thrown during this ignition cycle. Bottom line, the light flashed, there's a code stored in there. Retrieve it and share what was found, it may further confirm the problem as a CAT or point you in a different (and hopefully correct) direction. |
come to think off it i did also have the cat cut off on my truck at the same time i had to replace the fuel pressure regulator so that could also be the problem as well.

I think you might have something wrong with your

Monte04ls.... wow..... lol :P |
I had a restored 1976 El Camino Custom 350/2 automatic. The same symptoms you mentioned on your car happened on my Elk. Since it was a restoration, I had gone as far as to install a new CAT as well to keep it all all original. Long story short: Same problem as you. Turned out that for whatever reason, the new CAT was bad and did the same thing. I'm not sure exactly how you would test it for flow-rate but I sure concur with the other members. Hope you get it fixed soon!

No just taking it to a local spot. So if its a bad cat what route should I take without getting raped ? I heard someone talking about a high flow cat on zzp is much cheaper then stock.

Thanks for everybody who chimed in ! It was the CAT 80% Clogged.

I'm cool pretty much everything I got I needed the rear manifold had a whole in it and the plugs and wires looked like crap and the fuel filter was in bad shape. Just wish I didn't have to come off all this money in one week !
|
How much did it cost to replace the cat and the manifold?
|
The manifold hurt part and labor was $690.15 so far quotes on the cat one shop is saying $199 & another is saying $281

Thanks, I think I might have an exhaust leak too, I hear a tapping when I accelerate and my mpg has went down. I'm not showing any codes. I also have a ruff idle. So far I did the wires, plugs, coils, and icm. My monte is running hotter that normal too. The tapping sound is the thing that is getting me because I don't know where it is coming from. I plan on taking it to my local shop this weekend to try to find the problem.
|
Hope ur area has better cost then mine. Did u do the work urself ?
|
The cost is one thing but getting a proper diagnosis and finding someone who is going to do quality work is another. I'm still kind of jumping from shop to shop. I did the plugs, wires, and control module myself. The only thing is that I don't have all the tools I need and I stay in an apartment for now. I brought my car in March of this year in the first month it spun a bearing, I had my pops do a block swap with a Buick from a junk yard in Mississippi (that's where I was at when the engine failed). The car ran OK after the swap but I have been getting a rough idle and tapping when I accelerate. That's why I change everything and I even took it to the dealership and they did a crank relearn procedure. Still no help for the rough idle and tapping, I feel like the car has also lost some pep as well. I'm going to try to get my fuel filter changed this week. I tried to change it myself but it looks like it has seized up and I did want to mess anything up, so I will take it to the shop and let them have a try at it. Hopefully it won't be more than 20 bucks since I already have the filter. This won't fix the tapping but maybe it will give me some of my pep back.
|
Hope it all works out for you ! I'm waiting to pick my car up it ended up costing me $285 for Cat & labor. I bought my SS the end of Nov last yr its been pretty good but the pass 2 weeks man when it rains it pours !!!!
