Default 98 monte will not go in drive but will go in first

so the other day i was driving and i was going in reverse and shifted to drive and the car would not go anywhere, i put the car in first and it would take off and then after i had increased speed to around 35mph i could toss it in drive and it will go. what is going on here? i had someone tell me there are 3 belts above the trans and that it was one of these belts? is this true? i need to get this car going asap so any help is appreciated, thanks

Hi Member: Slim88, and Welcome to the MCF

Have you checked you transmission Fluid ?
When was the last time your Trans was serviced ?
How many miles on your Monte ?
What model/engine is in your Monte ?

Look forward to additional infor.
Good Luck

hey I thought I had the same problem, but you might not have shifted it correctly. The little orange indicator is a little too large and it might look like its in drive when its in neutral. Just make sure you count how many shifts it does, and not relying on how it looks. Its something so simple, I over looked. Maybe you did too
