im wondering if the 1987 monte SS with a 305is carbed or TBI

 

It should be TBI.

 

thanks, i had a 1989 chevy c1500 with a tbi 305, it actually had some good power, got 17-18 mpg too. are the 305's in the monte's basically the same as the truck 305's?

 

My '87 SS came with a carb. I think it was a quadrajunk actually. Not exactly sure if it was stock, but it had all the smog and stuff on it, and looked untouched with 60,000 original miles, so I'd say it was probably untouched.

And yea, the monte 305's are just your basic 305, but I believe they were the "HO" models, and they had different heads. Don't expect real good power. My old '87 SS with the stock 305, a holley 600 carb, headers and true duals with the stock 200-4r overdrive tranny and 3.73's only ran high 15's in the quarter. Not real powerhouse's...

 

well im not hoping for a race car lol, im hoping it will have a little more get up n go then my bronco with a 302, but that thing actually moves if u wind up the gears

hmm, its really hard to tell from that pic. If you pull the air cleaner off and snap one it'll be really easy to tell though. It LOOKS stock, so I'm gonna guess its carburated.

 

I think with that round air cleaner set-up its carbed. A TBI'ed engine would have a side mounted cleaner set-up ... ahead of the throttle body.

 

Air cleaner like that is definetly a carb.

 

Carb and tbi look the same.You cant tell with just looking at the air cleaner as they look pretty much the same.You have to take it off to know for sure.
