Default 3.4L to 3.8L SC engine swap

Hi, I have a 2001 Ls with the 3.4. I was thinking about an engine swap to a supercharged 3.8. I just wanted to know if its evenpossible to do this with the computer and all andwho might know how to do this and what year3.8 I should buy. Also what do you do with the computer, do you reprogram it or replace it. I would appreciate feed back on how to do this becauseI would like to do thissometime.

be easier to sell your car and buy a used 2004-05 s/c

but it IS possible, you would need everything and do a swap. even your exhaust work will have to be changed.

I thought that would be the best idea to sellmy car and buySC 04-05. But Ijust thought about it and wondered if the swap was possible. So, ifI did swap the engine I would have to replace everything on my car then.

It is definitely possible to put the 3.8L supercharged engine in a Monte LS. If you use the search function, you will find alot of threads detailing what can be done. There is also a forum of people that do L67 swaps, putting them into alot of different cars (Fiero's seem to be common for L67 swaps). I think it is called L67swap.org or L67swap.com.

Here's a thread from december...read through it, and you will find bumpin96monte's technical info on what you would need to do, and some cost breakdowns, and me explaining exactly why I chose to sell my '01LS and buy an '04 s/c SS instead of doing an L67 swap......

https://montecarloforum.com/m_111123/tm.htm

Basically you would need to buy a 3.8L s/c engine (L67), 4t65e transmission, axles from a supercharged car, you would need the wiring harness from a supercharged car, and yes, you would have to have your PCM reprogrammed for the swap.
It could be done for fairly cheaply, assuming you are very savvy with the wiring in these cars (Milzy Motorsports estimates 2 weeks to finish a swap.....6 hours to pull the old engine and drop the new one in, then 13 days to rewire everything).
www.milzymotorsports.com This guy does these swaps fairly often. He has prices listed for everything you would need. Granted you would get everything much cheaper if you got everything from a wrecked GTP or regal GS at a junkyard.

thanks for showing me this. Thats definitely a long time though to not have my car but thats what rentals are for. The cool part is that Milzy Motorsports is located in Ohio, but mapquest say its about a 3 hour drive. I need to save a lot of money to do this, and I wonder if the engines and trans are new?

Nope.
I don't know what exactly the cost is of a crate 3800 engine and trans, but I'm positive that the ones that Milzy uses for the swaps are used. I do know that you have the option for a lower mileage engine/trans if you want to pay more. I think the base price for the swap is with a 50-60k motor/trans. Price would go up ALOT with brand new stuff. Whether or not the engines/transmissions are freshly rebuilt before the swap, you'd have to ask him to find out.

Easier, of course- but far more stupid when it comes to money.

For comparison purposes, I checked KBB. I assumed both cars were in good condition, both with 60k miles-private party values. (left all options the same between the two)

01 LS = $3815
04 SS SC = $8660
05 SS SC = $9795

So you're talking a difference of $4845 for an 04, and a difference of $5980 for an 05. A stock L67 swap can be done for half of the price difference to an 04.

Here are the parts you need:
-complete L67/4t65hd
-engine bay wiring harness for a 3800 monte (any), probably best if you find it from an 01
-L36-L67 wire swap conversion (two plugs, about $20)
-pcm tuned for an L67/4t65
-axles
-fresh fluids

You should be able to easily pull it off under $2k. Even if you found a stupid low mile setup and dropped $3k on it- you'd still have $2k-3k to put into mods, or savings. This does assume that you or someone you know knows how to work on cars.

If you have to take it to a shop like milzy's and get it done, then IMO, you're better off just buying the new car- as most places charge $4k-5k.

Milzy Motorsports estimates 2 weeks to finish a swap
Thats definitely way longer than it should take you. If its your first swap ever (assuming you have the ability and tools)-1 week would be a long estimate. I bet someone who knew what they were doing could do it in a weekend easily. Its literally a bolt in / plug in deal. Even the L36-L67 swap wiring adaptors are literally plug ins.

When I had contacted Milzy a year or so ago, he estimated 2 weeks for the swap.

Definitely a liberal estimate, but that is his turnaround time estimate for a being a full size shop that isn't only working on one car. I would assume that the time estimate is padded to compensate for any possible issues also.

LS has a single exhaust setup, is that even functional with the 3.8 S/C?
