'06 SS: D.O.D. Behavior
Hi everyone!
I really enjoy reading the forums here and just wanted to see if any other members with an '06 Monte SS experience the same behavior that I do with displacement on demand.
My vehicle is all original with no modifications whatsoever. All my maint. service is up to date as far as oil/fluids etc. I only have 36k miles on the vehicle and it was purchased NEW back in '09 (leftover on the lot, only 300 miles on it.)
My driving habits are normal, I don't always accelerate hard etc.
I have noticed the following behavior for a while and was not sure if it was "normal" or not. To me it just doesn't make any sense but maybe I am just not informed enough about the displacement on demand feature.
I have noticed that during normal acceleration from a complete stop my D.O.D. will abruptly kick in for maybe 3-4 seconds and then go back to all 8-cyl power (usually in second gear at this time). In transitioning back to 8cyl from 4cyl after this few seconds it feels like the transmission loses power slightly and then regains power quickly after.
To me it just doesn't make any sense that D.O.D. is being activated when I am accelerating from a complete stop and requiring power. I can understand if it kicks in once I have reached my cruising speed, which it does fine, but to have this happen during an acceleration that is NOT extremely light just does not seem right and the way the cars speed jerks around during this doesn't seem normal either.
Anyone else experience this behavior? Hopefully its nothing serious as I am out of warranty, but I'm thinking I should get it checked before it becomes an issue (if it is one at all). I know some people have gone in and disabled the D.O.D. feature, but I do find it useful in saving fuel especially when I commute to school on the interstate.
Thanks in advance for any comments/experience.
Happy New Year!

Welcome to the forum. I too have an '06 SS. That doesn't seem right to me. There are so many variables that have to be satisfied for DOD to kick in, that you should never activate it on accident. I would definitely have this looked at before it could cause real damage further down the road.
I've never experienced this, and hope i never do. I'm with everyone on this one, with the given track record on these transmissions, i'd have her checked out before it's a serious issue.
As far as I know, the D.O.D. should never kick in on the Montes and Impalas until you are in 4th gear. I have heard that the GXP's can kick in while in 3rd, but I can not verify this. I would get it looked at, because something is wrong.
Sounds like the Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid is going to be replaced. They believe this is causing the D.O.D. behavior as well as the unusual gear shifting I have been experiencing. Hopefully this does the trick!
Thanks again everyone!
Thanks again everyone!
keep us updated.
Mine has always worked in third gear, but not acceptable for it to be working while I'm still accelerating to fourth (not to mention it sounded awful when it did that!)
