mines do that too sometimes in the morning with cold starts, i think it was called piston slap which is normal for these motors, once warmed up it goes away. you could also check for codes just to make sure everything is ok

Whens the last time you did an oil and filter change on the motor?
Is it low on oil? I would also add some Lucas high mileage motor treatment when you do an oil/filter change!

What motor is in this car and how many miles are on it?

3400 or 3800?

More common on the 3400 than the 3800 engine. Definitely start by checking your oil levels

It is the 3800 with 75,000 miles. I just had the oil changed a month ago

Try removing the oil filler cap and see if you see any brown milk shake colors in there or on the edges of the filler cap...

It just maybe dumping antifreeze into the motor as well.... pull the dip stick and smell it...Does it smell like gasoline?

You may just have something serious going on inside the motor....
Generally 3800's do not sound like that.

Maybe its time for upper and lower intake gasket repair?
Have the uim and lim ever been changed ????
3800's are known for there intake failures both upper and lower..so you might as well change both since you'll have it apart anyway.

Are you loseing/Using antifreeze?

Its worse when you first start it. The rough idle and the knocking. Then when it gets up to operating temp it seems to go away. After what my dad read we added some marvel mystery oil to it. To free sticky lifters.
