Well that is a real shame. A lot of folks don't have a clue on car care.
I have many stories of helping people out and then you also have the out of pocket for your trouble.

The Velocity channel has been advertising Auto Geek, with Dennis Gauge, Wayne Carinie from cars and coffee, and a bunch of the shows. Check the link I put up there are also tips for doing just about anything to your car.

For light swirls, he might not need to go straight to a compound.

Just a light polish can probably remove 90% of those swirls from improper washing.

Clay and wax don't remove swirls, just contaminants. It's a great start to wash then clay, but then you need to polish, seal, and wax. Compound if the polish doesn't work.

You want to try to least aggressive first, then move down to more aggressive abrasives if it doesn't work.

Yeah try polish first, I've honestly polished a hood with a drill and buffing attachment. If that doesn't work, then go to rubbing compound. Besides, a nice polish is gorgeous.
