Thumbs down Just finished detailing the car and I hate it!

Every year once the weather clears up I wash/wax the car. This year I found at least half a dozen pock marks in the paint that I didn't know about. Most of them were on the hood but there were a few on the doors and roof. I'm not hard on my car, but it does see a lot of highway driving and I guess it just comes with the roads. The most worrying part is there are two small ones on the roof that have already rusted over! Any tips on taking care of this now so that it doesn't become a larger problem? They are quite small but stand out like a sore thumb because they are rust colored against shiny black paint. Should I carefully sand the area and then clear coat over it? I do have some OEM touch-up paint from GM but it doesn't have a clear coat over it. Whats good to use on this?

Well if you want to put the time into it you can go ahead and sand them down, but if you do that it would almost just be worth it to sand patches and re paint. I don't know how much paint work you do yourself though so maybe touch up paint for the time being and see if it gets worse? Then you can consider painting.

usually you can wax it out, and keep it looking decent with wax

this is how it will work out for you if you want to do it your self. step one make a small square with tape and news paper sand the best you can. second hit it with primer two coats third scor it with a scotch cleaning pad then hit it with the tutch up paint you will go threw all of it if you want to make it look good hit it with coats inbowtween coats let it dry some

Are you sure it's rust and not rail dust or industrial fall out? Try clay barring the area and see if that takes it out. Since I have a Silver car I notice "spots of rust" even on the plastic - it's rail dust and the clay bar takes it off.

You can pick up a cool little tool at Napa just for cleaning rust out of stone chips. It looks like a little pen, but it has little fiberglass strands sticking out one end. You can precisely scratch the rust out of the tiny little area and then dab some touch up paint in the spot. It works great, I use it at work all the time.

Looks like this

dupli-color sells the small brush / pen roller combo in both color and clear.
