The clay bar is a lubricant and a soft clay used to remove deposits from your paint.

the lubricant is sprayed on, and allows the clay to glide across the paint. As it does, it hits small and large particulate and captures it int he clay. this makes the paint smoother, and prepares it for polishing and waxing.

 

If your paint hasn't been cleaned in quite a while using a clay bar will bring it back to life. The paint on my Monte wasn't too bad, so as an alternative I used the Meguiars Ultimate Compound instead and achieved the same results. I topped it off with a coat of their NXT Wax and the results are amazing.

 

Now how do you no when you need to use a clay bar?

There is no definitive schedule that can be applied to all cars. Many factors play into how often claying is recommended for your vehicle (where your car is stored, how often you wash it, what environmental elements are in your area, etc). However, you can easily determine for yourself how often to clay by performing a simple test. Every time you wash, your vehicle, run the palm and fingertips of your clean hand across the top surfaces. If you feel a rough, bumpy surface, it is time for you to clay. Depending on the mix of factors that affect your vehicle, you could benefit from claying as often as weekly to as rarely as once a year.

I did this to my Black '98 MC LS & couldn't believe the difference it made. Like I have a new paint job. Now I need to go to paintless dent removal to get a few dings off the doors!

 

Take the plunge, by the clay bar kit (plus an extra spray detailer + more wax) JUST IN CASE, and take a nice long beautiful cloudy cool day and just spend all day outside having fun. You WILL be astonished at how smooth the paint feels and how much nicer the car will look afterwards.
