Cully if you look at the panel you will see four round tabs which are nylon christmas tree fasteners similar to interior tabs. Four 1/4 holes drilled into the lid bracing useing the panel itself as the guide and it simply pushes right into place. useing the push tabs allows for a tight snug fit with no movement that may cause rattle or noise in the trunk, also the panels will not fall from place as they may with the use of velcro or two sided tape which may lose thier adhiesion in damp weather or thru time in addition to leaving glue residue should you remove the mat. The drilling is safe and simple when the right tools and attention is used. A center punch to mark the holes. a small flat tipped bit to run the pilot hole and a 1/4" flat tip bit to set the final holes, Use drill bit stop collars to limit the depth and with the use of the flat tip bits the cut will not want to pull the drill bit along giving you complete control of travel. My mats are pre-drilled to mate up with the lid braces for the 2000 -07 lids and once I get the templates made I hope to be able to make them for every generation Monte's
