RE: question
i'm just going to assume the fuel guage is the same on hte 5th and 6th generations (i do'nt mean the display gauge... i mean the actual gauge that is in teh fuel tank.)
Chevrolet fuel gauges, whether on a Monte, a Suburabn, a pick up, or anything... they stay full forever then they free fall to empty. my parents suburban can do about 70 miles on empty... never tested the motne but when my low fuel light comes on it still has 4 gallons.

RE: question
It isn't safe to run on red because the sensor is like a "bob" and when it gets super low like that, it can be turned or moved so that from then on the reading is off. Thus, I've never run the car below a quarter tank.

RE: question
I run mine to 1/4 tank before filling up but I always seem to have about 5-6 gallons still in the tank (16.5 gallon tank) The gas guages in these montes are good for nothing more than decoration, especially if the needle falls below 1/4 tank. Do you run it until the low fuel light comes on? We had an ls in the shop that had the low fuel light on and i drove it about 5 miles through townwithout running out of gas and who knows how long the lady drove it for with the light on.
