Has anyone else heard the ticking at cold start up. Sounds like valves tapping? I'm taking a guess that this is lifter noise? It goes away after a few minutes, but its nerve racking

Do your montes do this? warpath 04-07-2005, 06:49 PM mine's not doing it yet w/ less then 500 miles on it, but that scare's me and i'm not scared of much. montejass 04-07-2005, 11:24 PM Mine does not tap, but I have heard of it happening to others and supposedly this is normal for the 3400's and less with the 3800's. And I think your right on the $$$ with it being the lifters. I'll have to remember where I saw this info; there was a chemical that you can pour into the crank case right before an oil change that will get rid of it. I'll see what I can hunt down for you. Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I was on the road all day... TVW montejass 04-07-2005, 11:26 PM Forgot to add, what kind of oil are you using? I've used Mobil 1 from day one and have had no problems... TVW fd720 04-08-2005, 09:47 AM I havent gotten the first oil change yet. I only have 1001 miles on it. Its done this, since I noticed it, from around 340 miles. As I talk to you now at 7:50am at work, when I cranked up this morning to warm it up, it ticked for quite a few minutes. One of the guys here at the dealership says ...come on everyone...together now.....THATS NORMAL!!![sm=bs.gif] montejass 04-08-2005, 03:51 PM If I were you, I would change it now. Try Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. I have used Royal Purple in past vehicles and really could not tell much of a difference between that and Mobil 1 if any. TVW fd720 04-08-2005, 04:36 PM Well we do sell Mobil 1 here and I stock it on my shelf and I have used it my 91 Camaro before. I think I will put Mobil in it today. Thanks T.[sm=goodidea.gif] benhillzone3 04-09-2005, 04:20 PM well damn it took me a minute to get back to you all here but my mc has about 46000 miles on it and i have yet to hear it at all warpath 04-10-2005, 04:43 AM this post was cancelled ,but i was just trying to help benhillzone3 04-10-2005, 12:45 PM what was the purpse of this post? what is the message that you were trying to get out? i must have missed it completely. chevy_jj 04-12-2005, 12:52 AM well from what ive seen at the dealership is that gm does not see this to be threstening to the life of the engine. it shows up especially in the new style pickups. the majority of vehicles with piston slap usually quiet down after it gets a little heat into the engine. fd720 you said that you work at the dealership, you service manager should be able to bring up some info for you about piston slap. otherwise take it to a different shop and raise hell there. we have a guy that come in with a cavalier and he complained about every bump and noise, which every bump and noise is pretty much a given in a cavy, and gm actually gave him a 100k waranty on it so now were stuck with this punk for that much longer, but i would definately have them put it on record now so there is something that says it was a conscern. you may also be hearing the fuel injectors opperating. i have run into this before. the piston slap is basically a round piston in a egg shaped piston which changes its shape when it expands from the combustion temp. me personally i wouldnt worry about it. my truck has had it since i put my engine in and that motor was straight from the factory. i can understand you conscern but for you working in the dealership they may be able to do something for you but whats gonna happen after 20k miles is it gonna do it again? good luck. fd720 04-12-2005, 10:06 AM Thanks. Yeah, I was looking on SI and found some complaints about noise but it wasnt the noise my car was making. Some of the complaints were pulley noise at the crank pulley some were injectors. Well I guess as long as the 3/36 is there I will be covered. I guess if gas goes back down(very wishful thinking) I may look at getting a redesigned Silverado in 07. I hear thats when the bodystyle will be changed. Who knows, I may get an 07 Trailblazer SS. At 391 hp it will be a bad*** truck.[sm=gears.gif] chevy_jj 04-12-2005, 09:41 PM yeah that thing looks great with the 20 inch wheels and that v8 pushing that thing to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds is pretty incredible. |
