Wheel Hub Assembly Specs? + Opinion of something
 

Hi gang.
I have a 2003 Monte LS 3400. I have a faulty drivers side front wheel hub assembly and I saw that Amazon sells the Timkin HA590085, Front Hub Assembly, INCL WHL BRG - REORDER - NON-ABS. My symptom is that it vibrates when I brake like it sounds like it's rubbing against the rotor when I brake but it's not, brake pedal feels smooth, vibration is in the wheel

I also found out that I need to torque them on which makes sense. Does anyone know the Torque specs of these are?

Also, anyone have an opinion on the difference between a seal-less transmission filter as compared to a traditional filter replacement with separate gasket? aka, the listings below..

Well I just found an incredibly interesting article. A company called SKF put a handout on the internet in April 2007. Here you go, hope they're right.

so does that mean for my monte i need to torque at 118 ft ibs?

Yes, that is for the large axle nut in the middle.

Couple things. As Chibi said, 118 ft-lbs is the axle nut. 96 ft-lbs is is the bearing/hub bolts. It seems a lot of people are different, but I needed a puller to get the hub out, mine was stuck in there. Other people say they come out easy. If it's your only car and you can rent it for free before starting then do it. Be prepared.

To see if your hub is bad jack the tire up, grab the top and bottom and try to "shake it." Excessive movement could be a bearing. Your comment about the wheel shaking while braking could be a warped rotors. Mine were warped (turned one too many times) and they shuddered under braking. I never felt it in the brake pedal.

You'll probably get a better response in the 'Engine and Transmission' forum, but I think the 'seal less' transmission filter is just them selling the filter without the gasket included. You're taking the time, doing the work, and spending the money you might as well put in a new gasket while you're at it. I suppose they could be selling it without the little "seal" that sits up in the tranny, but that doesn't make sense for a part claiming to be AC Delco. That piece was a bitch to get out, I should have left it, and in hindsight, it appears others have recommended the same. Also, the torque specs for putting the cover back on are crazy low, like 10 ft-lbs low.

fixed the wheel hub today, was much easier than i thought. took around half an hour to complete. the wheel hub puller that i rented took care of the muscle work. my first time doing this myself, and i feel good...didnt have a torque wrench so i just tightened everything down with my own judement

I don't think that was a good idea.

Congrats on a job well done but you may want to get a torque wrench and tighten them up to spec just to be on the safe side. You should be able to get one from the autozone lone a tool program or just buy an inexpensive one.
