I know this was posted awhile back but I can't seem to find it. I just put new tires on my car and the people at the tire shop couldn't answer my question as to what pressure to run: the factory recommendations on the door jam or the tire manufacturer's recommendation. It was closing time and the only people left there were the kids who mounted the tires so no one was there who I trusted for an answer.

I have Fuzion ZRi's that are 255-45-17 on 8.5 x 17 rims. The manufacturer recommends 52 psi and thefactory recommends 32 psi.

At 52 psi it rides like it's on solid tires but 32 seems low for these tires. Ireplaced the same size tires (they were Dayton ZR-1's) and ran the factory recommendations of 44 psi and it rode perfect.

Logic tells me to run thetire manufacturer's recommendation (it's their tire and they know what it needs).Can I lower it to 44 psi like the other tires and not affect tread wear? The Dayton's lasted 50,000 miles of fairly aggresive driving at times andI wanted to go back with the same tire, but they were discontinued and replaced by the Fuzion's.

Any thoughts on this?

it should say on the actual tire what psi to run in it...and thats what i would go from...safest bet anyway..you dont want to be driving down the highway @ 75-80mph and have a tire go on you...that wouldn't be too fun

Thanks. I may back the pressure off a couple of psi to soften the ride some. I should be able to tell pretty quickly if the tire is wearing on the outer edges if it is too low. The ride is just too harsh right now!

One of the old Daytons had about a one foot slit in it where the treads were leting go! Very scary seeing as how I do drive pretty fast at times and love cornering hard.

Just to recap the car: 2002 MC SS; eibach springs lowered 2"; KYB gas struts; SLP sway bars with polyurethane bushings; 8.5" x 17" Helo rims with 255-45-17 Fuzion ZRi tires; drilled brake rotors; Hawk carbon fiber brake pads; stainless steel brake lines; K&N drop in filter; Random Technology down pipe with hi flow cat; SLP cat-back exhaust.

Future plans to be done this summer: Ram Air hood with SLP CAI; Accel coils and plug wires; SLP 1.90:1 roller rockers; reflashed chip to match modifications.

Then sit back and enjoy the car!!!

hey, do you have any pics from the front and back of the car that show how wide the tires look and how good they look..i was thinking about doing that size tire on my 17's when i need new tires

I don't have any but in a couple of weeks I can get some and I'll post them. They are the widest tire I could get without any rubbing. If it wasn't lowered i might could have gone a little wider, but as it is, they rub slightly on a decent bump, especially with a passenger in the back.

Very good info, Space! Yep, it said 51 psi, like the guys at the shop said. I think I still will play with the pressure some to help ride quality. The info said that was maximum pressure, not required pressure.I don't think I'll go lower than 44 psi, though. Thanks! I'll post pics when I can.

Wow! 51!. The manual on the LTZ says 28 psi for the Eagle LS's. I keep about 30 in there for a great ride. When I bought it, the tires has 34 psi. Tire pressures seem to vary greatly.

Same tire i use 32 psi but with nitrogen instead of air, rides good all the timenot just when cold, Drive 120 miles per day on I10 seems to get better mileage but does ride better and have lasted over 55k since installed

just thought i'd add my 2 cents...

for best tire wear and fuel economy i think the car manufacturers pressures are typicly low.

for ride comfort and handling, typicly i think car manufacturers pressures are the best bet.

as for the tires max air pressure, i think you probly get the best milage, worst ride, and generally good tire wear... but keep an eye out that the center of the tire isnt wearing faster than the rest of the tread.

personally i just set my tire pressures where i see the best tread wear...and it varries by vehicle/tire size, how i drive a particular car. right now i'm running....
monte on 225-55-17 35psi
camaro on 275-40-17 30psi
olds88 on 225-60-16 44psi

long story longer... just see what works best for you.
