Default Advice: Improving ride quality?

I'm looking into options for softening [sic.] my Gen 5's ride (I prefer ride quality over handling). While it rides nice on new pavement and moderately worn roads, it does pick up the potholes, seams, and sunken/lifted pavement to a disturbing level when old man Winter leaves his mark (the roads around my area are awful this time of year).

Have any of you attempted to soften/smooth out your ride? I've always been told that shocks/struts can make some difference, as well as tires and air inflation, but also that the 108" wheelbase somewhat limits how soft you can make the ride.

What have you found to work well? Thanks for any insight.

Bruce
