Question about aftermarket wheels and Tire Pressure Monitoring TPMS

Okay, so I'm an oldschooler and this is my first experience with so many computer controlled sensors and such.

So the question is, when I get my aftermarket 20" wheels/tires, if I do not equip them with any TPMS equipment, is the car going to throw the Low Tire Pressure warning light constantly?

They're not legally required where I'm at, and never thought about them until today when the sensor went off (stock wheels, LR has a slow leak).

Thanks, and check out my SPL Build thread I'll be posting later today.

it depends on what year your MC is. 2000 to 2007 has the TPMS in the wheel hub. After 2007 the started to use the TPMS in thewheels. If you ate going to replace your wheels with 20" and you have a 2007 and above you need to purchase TPMS for the new valve stems.

the above is not exactly correct. what year is your monte? I have a 2006 LT3 and it does have individual sensors in each wheel!

It's a 2001 SS

then you should have the the tpms in the wheel hub. In some yrs they may have put them on different models on the wheels. In the past you could have checked to see if you had tpms sensers by looking at the valve stem. They were a silverish color instead of black. Now they have tpms sensers with black valve stems. And the info above is correct with the exception of the yrs. 2000 - 2005 sixth gen monte carlo

I have a 2000 ss and when I put my aftermarkets on, it sets the sensors off but all you have to do is reset it once and its fine. and resetting it is super easy, I do believe its in your manual even. And back to the previous statements..... Im pretty sure there were no montes made after 2007.... just saying for future reference :-)

Ok thanks guys, I have no problem resetting the light as I did earlier this week. My concern was a constant reminder on my dash.

i have a 2004 (17" stock) when i put 16" wheels driving to the track, for the first time the low tire pressure came on. lucky i had my stock radio with me. i plugged the stock radio in and reset the code. it done that 2 different times on each visit to the track. i had my 16" on last may and no light came on at all. all i can say is don't get rid of your stock radio. you can buy a separate harness for your stock radio and mount it in the back of the trunk and when ever you need to reset oil light or low tire pressure it makes thing a lot easier.

I already pulled the stock radio as you could see in my SPL build thread.

The lamp switch worked to reset the Low Tire Pressure light.

I confirmed I don't have the valve stem sensors so when I get my wheels I plan on resetting it the same way if it comes on.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I have aftermarkets. and mine would be in the Hub I assume. Mine never comes on unless the obvious or I get my tires rotated ect..
