2006 SS - I want the best looking & fitting 18s.

I just picked up my 2006 SS and would like to research the wheels. I would like to keep the factory 18" size, and I lean towards TSW wheels for their looks & price...

What would look killer on a Silver 2006 SS and fit right to the edge of the fender lip? I like the 18" TSW Snetterton so far...I would try 18x 8" front & 18x9.5 rear with proper offset. Not sure if possible, but will measure tomorrow. I does look tight in there with the rear spring right there

God_Bot 05-02-2009 09:53 PM

I've got 18x7.5's that fit really nicely, but with slightly different suspension I don't know if they'd fit the same on yours.

What sort of finish are you looking for? Black, machined, chrome, painted, a combo?

SSilver 05-03-2009 01:18 AM

I would like Silver or Chrome. Not much else will do...although the right black wheels can look killer on a silver car, but they must be perfect...Meh...Silver or Chrome, please.

BTW - your car looks very sleek and almost not real! What color is that? What year Monte? Looks great ;)

RickAKATed10 05-04-2009 10:10 AM

TSW Wheels are pretty pricey. Good luck with your search. Post a few pics of wheels you're interested in and we'll tell you which ones we like. I'm sure some one can even do some Photoshops for you.

good luck fitting 9.5's in the rear. why would you put a wider wheel/tire in the rear on a front wheel drive car anyway? i think a gunmetal five spoke wheel would look sharp with the silver.

Thanks, it's called Dark Silver Metallic, really just a dark metallic grey. Super boring unless clean, then you can see the slight sparkle and the black just helps it pop a bit. Oh, and it's an '06 LT with the 3.9L.

tirerack.com is a great source, they're what I ended up using.

Like the others have said wider tires on the rear of a FWD car is a bit goofy, but if that's what you want. Did you know that the Gran Prix GXP's of late came with 8" wide wheels up front and only 7" in the back?

Just looking through the newest tirerack magazine and some of my favorite brands with new wheels this season would be Boss and SM (SportMuscle). I've always like Avarus to but they look to be more luxury tuner style. I can almost guarantee that most of us active members prefer 5 spokes because any more or less kinda looks funny on our cars.

Good Luck

It is all about the look of the car. The stock front wheels sit a bit outward towards the fender, but the rears are tucked in way too far for my taste. I like a car to look right - wider in the rear, or at least even with the front, regardless of FWD or RWD. I'm not talking about tires sticking way out past the wheelwell lip, just right to the edge of the wheel well lip, both front & rear. Trust me - it will look fantastic. My search for 5-spokes continues.......

AwesomeSS 05-05-2009 06:47 PM

There is also Discount Tire. They are local. I bought some Koenig rims for my 05 Mustang there.

RocknSS04 05-05-2009 07:23 PM

Tire rack is OK, but mine came from Discount Tire. I ordered them. Took a week to get them. Tire Rack will only show you what they have in stock.

Personally, I'd just do a Dogpile search of chrome or silver Monte Carlo wheels, and find WHAT you like, then contact either of the 2 places above and find out how much and how long.

Another thing, there ARE wheels made in the USA, such as my Eagle Alloy chrome 077s. I paid $1,400 with tires out the door for mine. With locks.

SSilver 05-05-2009 07:43 PM

I had those AE 077s on my 02 GTP. They were nice and fit well. Too bad it appears they've stopped making them. I may look at what AE & American Racing have to offer.

SSilver 05-05-2009 08:10 PM

Looking at Tirerack.com...how about these for $140 each:

Perhaps with a set of 235/50/18 Nitto Extremes for good measure. $1250 shipped to my door for the complete balanced set. Good or no?

inssanity21 05-05-2009 09:53 PM

i have these in 19" (i had to fold the wheel well lips with the subs in back and eibach lowered)

i love these

(i would paint the inserts diff colors to match the car and the day :))

God_Bot 05-05-2009 11:50 PM

Look nice to me, but it's ultimately up to you. I think I spent about 9-10 months looking before I even had the money and kept switching what I wanted the whole time. Mine ended up at about $1800 to my door ready to be put on with the TPMS installed.

RickAKATed10 05-06-2009 09:59 AM

Those Elbrus wheels are nice. I was looking at those for a little bit, and considering the other set of Elbrus wheels TireRack offers. They have a silver face and black inside the spokes.

I think if you want the rear wheels to meet the fender, instead of going with a wider wheel just try looking for a different offset and have the same size wheels on both front and back. Unfortunately this will make rotating your tires a lot harder... I'm happy with my choice. My wheels cost $515 delivered and another $160 to have mounted and balanced with TPMS installed. My wheels are a lot more expensive than that normally so I jumped on the deal. I'm still using the stock RS-A tires for now though to save some money.

SSilver 05-06-2009 05:49 PM

I like your idea of just using the stock Goodyears RS-As on the new wheels. Mine only have 21k on them and plenty of tread. My plan was to have a "summer set" and a "winter set", but if I can save $600 by not buying new tires and use the stock TPMS, the new wheels suddenly aren't that expensive...Thanks, Man

RickAKATed10 05-07-2009 10:18 AM

Exactly! I will probably by some winter tires for the stock wheels and get new tires next summer or something. It was great to save a little money up front though. I mean my tires only have 18K miles on them. No need to get new ones yet. Even if the RS-A's do suck. lol

Those are Fricken awesome Chibi!!!

ChibiBlackSheep 05-08-2009 02:52 PM

HAHA thank you :)

One day I shall have them... once I stop modding the engine and decide I can start doing things for the look of my car :P

RickAKATed10 05-08-2009 03:19 PM

I went the ricer route! lol looks before speed, but I figure the LS4 has plenty to make me happy.

ChibiBlackSheep 05-08-2009 03:37 PM

LOL when you have a V8 under the hood, I don't think getting a set of Rims is considered ricer :P

Now if you got the LS model, just so you can save money for aftermarket rims / spoilers then YES :P

AwesomeSS 05-08-2009 04:05 PM

Awesome rims man!

RickAKATed10 04-20-2010 11:28 AM

What is the stock offset for our wheels?
My aftermarket 18x8's I believe is 35mm and I believe I was rubbing in the front. Do I need spacers? If so, what size? Thanks!

Mod `Mike,
Those are sweet look'in Rim's, and would look awesome
on your Monte SS.
Decent Price for them 2....What tire will you put on them ?

I laughed when I checked your link and it stated
that the center caps are `free :D
You will have to use your talented design ability for
something for the center cap : )

ChibiBlackSheep 04-20-2010 12:00 PM

Wow this is an old thread :)

Where I still love those rims, I'm going to be going to a 17" rim for the Monte after seeing all the tire prices for 18 :P

Since those don't come in 17, I'm going to be looking for another set. But again I have changed my mind on the build / priority of spending money so I'll have a few years to think about it haha

Anyone?

ChibiBlackSheep 04-21-2010 12:32 PM

Any 18x8 tire for a 2006 Monte SS that I find (on tirerack) seems to run an offset of +40 or more, so I would think if you need a spacer you would have to try to get that offest

RickAKATed10 04-21-2010 01:36 PM

So with that math, I'd probably need a 5 mm spacer? huh?

SSilver 04-21-2010 01:38 PM

Wow...didn't know this thread was still alive.

I just installed my new wheels & tires last week. I went with 18x9" American Racing Torq Thrust M black wheels with a 34mm offset. The tires are Goodyear Eagle F1's in 255/45/18. They fit very well, no rubbing.

RickAKATed10 04-21-2010 01:40 PM

Well let's see some pics!

ChibiBlackSheep 04-21-2010 01:42 PM

Ted, I guess you could do the 5mm spacer, or do you know the tire size you ran? If you ran the 50 height, maybe the 45 like he did would work without rubbing?

RickAKATed10 04-21-2010 01:52 PM

Yeah, I'm on stock 235/50/18 tires on the 8 inch wheel.

ChibiBlackSheep 04-21-2010 02:01 PM

perhaps going to the 45 would solve your rubbing issues then (if you don't want to run a spacer)

RickAKATed10 04-21-2010 02:11 PM

I would, but getting 4 new tires isn't an option.
