Are you switching the lamps BEFORE or AFTER the ballast? I can see switches going bad with 23,000 volts going through them.. But as for the wiring, use 12 or 14 gauge...

Make sure each is extended, don't take shortcuts like combining negatives (some negatives are NOT necessarily ground wires). Interior lights on some cars have independent negatives for dimming.
