pulling your trans 4th gen

STEP 1:
( Take a greese pencel and mark it's position on the rearend and trans before removing to avoid vibration after reinstalation)
Remove drive shaft bolts from the rear end, push the drive shaft towards the motor
(so the ujoint pulls out of the rearend you may have to help it with a large screw driver)
drop it down and pull it out of the trans and set off to the side so it is not in the way

Step 2: (Marking the position of the flywheel and tourq conver is not a bad idea)
Pull the plastic guard that goes between the trans and motor, then unbolt the flywheel from the tourq converter
(4 bolts you will have to undo one spin it to the next and so on)

Step 3: Locate your 4 crosmember bolt and undo them,
( make sure you have your jack under the pan at this time)
and unbolt trans mount in the middle then slide Xmember out
put it with your drive shaft so it is out of the way
( good time to notch or get a aftermarket one for dual exhaust)

Step4:unhook your kickdown cable from the linkage at the carb, pull your dip stick tube(will just make it easier), tans cooler lines, elctrical clip and speedo cable

Step5: lower the jack a bit and start unbolting the trans from the motor
(6bolts i do belive easiest way to get you top one's is a couple of long extentions from below)
lower the jack some more while pulling it back some,

Step 6 reinstalation, just reverse steps

New to the forum, took me a while to finally get to my 87 MCSS. Going to be doing a paint job and pulling the motor and trans. Will come back to your post and pull when I do it this summer.

If you want to pull motor and tranny both, you can leave them hooked together.

How would you pull the whole motor/trans? Through the engine compartment? I most likely will be held up with money for the paint job so won't be pulling this year :(

Remove accessory, radiator ect, make sure all wires ect are pulled put, unbolt trans crossmember with jack supporting it, unbolt motor mounts, using a cherry picker or garage rafters, chain and winch, attaching a hoist plate to where the carb was or bolt chain to block and hiked it out, usually easier with 2or more people
