3rd gear

I was reading on a tread when racing your MC you want to put it n 3rd I was wondering why is this

Leprechaun93 07-03-2015 01:52 PM

4th gear tends to be on the weak side so its best to not go into it at full throttle.

domo_smash 07-03-2015 01:58 PM

Ok so why 3rd and not drive

Leprechaun93 07-03-2015 03:07 PM

Leaving it in 3rd prevents the car from going into 4th gear. It'll shift through all the gears and stop at 3rd.

domo_smash 07-03-2015 03:10 PM

Aww ok thanks

turbo monte 07-04-2015 07:44 AM

Leprechaun is correct. Stay out of 4th under WOT!

Didn't they improve (harden) the shaft on the 4th gear clutch hub in midyear '03 and later models?
Are there other problems with 4th gear?

I believe the problem is as Turbo Monte said on a different post is the 4th gear clutch packs won't stand all the pressure / friction and they are the components which fail, not the shaft breaking.

When racing I start in 1st and shift up to 2nd and finally 3rd.

turbo monte 07-13-2015 08:33 AM

Zippy is correct. It's the 4th clutch packs that will be toast very fast when making decent power and in 4th gear

plumbob 07-13-2015 09:16 PM

Thanks guys. Good to know.

S.O.G. 09-05-2015 03:52 PM

So does it hurt the transmission to switch in and out of D and 3 when already on the road? Or must this change be done at a complete stop each time?

turbo monte 09-05-2015 04:38 PM

You can shift while moving, it won't hurt anything

Brendocee55 03-01-2016 05:17 PM

I like to dig out of 1st and go through the gears the few times i ever race. From a roll i'm usually in second though.

03vaderSS 03-17-2016 12:23 PM

so wait, i can put it in 3rd instead of drive, and it will shift up to 3rd and this is better if im racing and using wot??

Yes, that way you are locked out of 4th gear so it doesn't accidently shift into it.

ChibiBlackSheep 03-17-2016 02:36 PM

Also in Overdrive the car wants to shift earlier, 3 should hold longer.

Depends on your WOT Trans tune of course.

Brendocee55 03-17-2016 03:57 PM

Going to have to try 3rd instead of 1st from a dig

schroederchevelle 03-31-2016 11:21 AM

So if your engine is all stock, is wot in 4th gear still hard on it? I'm just curious.

turbo monte 03-31-2016 07:08 PM

Yes, 4th gear only has 2 frictions for clutches, they don't like seeing power pulls. Stock you will get away with it for a while though still hurting it slowly. The more power you make the quicker the damage happens

Brendocee55 03-31-2016 07:28 PM

I did a 3rd gear pull with some buddies the other night in Mexico and it felt so weird to leave it in 3rd, usually once the rpms got high i would throw it in drive. Also i tried a dig from 3rd and it felt so weird but it did pretty well. I was impressed
