THE BIG STORY

Vickers saved enough fuel to finish 1.4 seconds clear of Jeff Gordon. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was third, followed by Carl Edwards and Sam Hornish Jr. Tony Stewart (17th) leads Gordon by 284 points.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Brian Vickers claimed his sixth pole of the season in Friday qualifying at Michigan, with a 187.242 mph lap. An engine change sent Kasey Kahne to the rear of the field for the start. Mark Martin took the lead on the first lap Sunday. Rain brought out a yellow, then red flag, after seven laps. The restart came on lap 12. With Jimmie Johnson leading, a yellow on lap 53 produced pit stops, with Matt Kenseth coming out first by taking just two new tires. Johnson, then Martin, and then Johnson again, went back to the front. A debris yellow gave Tony Stewart a chance to go to the front by taking only two new tires. David Ragan and Kurt Busch wrecked. Later, Ragan spun again. On lap 142, Juan Pablo Montoya got a flat tire when Kahne got loose and hit him. Fuel mileage became an issue and Dale Earnhardt Jr. pitted with 42 laps remaining while Johnson, Vickers, Gordon and Martin were trying to complete 51 laps. Earnhardt led briefly for the first time since Talladega. David Stremme spun. Johnson went back to the lead with 35 laps left. Earnhardt, with no fuel worries, passed cars and closed on the leaders. Johnson slowed suddenly and pitted with two laps left. He stalled and finished 33d. Martin ran dry on the last lap, finished 31st, and dropped to 12th in points. Vickers averaged 131.531 mph with seven yellows for 36 of the 200 laps. Vickers is now 13th in points, just 12 behind Martin.

NASCAR Nationwide Series
Brad Keselowski passed both Kyle Busch and Brian Vickers on the last lap to win Saturday's Carfax 250 at Michigan. Keselowski, with just two new tires on his Chevrolet after final pit stops, took advantage of the high-line opening as Vickers' Toyota got loose in front of Busch. Both went low and lost momentum, allowing Keselowski to get a run. Busch led a series record 20th consecutive race, but his record streak of 10 straight top-two results ended as Vickers was runner-up. Busch exchanged words with Vickers on pit road. Keselowski won by .199 second and averaged 133.077 mph with four yellows for 21 of the 125 laps. Carl Edwards got involved in an early laps incident with Trevor Bayne and was 40th. He's now 339 points behind Busch.

NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series
Despite a crew chief change, Tony Pedregon won Sunday in Brainerd, Minn. Morgan Lucas, Greg Anderson and Hector Arana were the other pro class winners. Dickie Venables left as Pedregon's Funny Car crew chief, replaced on an interim basis by Tony Shortall. Pedregon's Chevrolet Impala ran 4.149 seconds, 295.59 mph to best Ron Capps' tire-smoking 6.613, 99.35 mph in a Dodge Charger. Pedregon is 28 points up on Capps. Jack Beckman qualified 16th in the Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger and lost in the semifinals. In Top Fuel, Lucas clocked 3.814, 309.27 mph vs. Larry Dixon's 3.818, 314.09 mph. Antron Brown leads Tony Schumacher by 217 points. In Pro Stock, Anderson won for the first time this season. His Pontiac GXP ran 6.641, 207.53 mph to best teammate Jason Line's 6.655, 207.30 mph. Ron Krisher qualified fifth in the Valvoline Chevrolet Cobalt and lost in the second round. Jeg Coughlin Jr. is 27 points ahead of Line. In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Arana's 6.983, 190.51 mph pass on a Buell was good enough as Junior Pippin red-lighted. Eddie Krawiec tops Andrew Hines by 108 points.

American Le Mans Series
David Brabham held off Gil de Ferran on a restart with just under seven minutes to go to win Sunday's Time Warner Cable Road Race Showcase at Road America. Brabham, co-driving with Scott Sharp, edged de Ferran (co-driving with Simon Pagenaud) by .461 second after 71 laps. Both were in P1 Acuras. That ended a four-race de Ferran/Pagenaud winning streak. Adrian Fernandez and Luis Diaz were third overall, and first in P2, in an Acura. In GT2, BMW got its first win, with Joey Hand and Bill Auberlen driving an M3. In the Challenge class, Martin and Melanie Snow won in a Porsche 911.
