Mark Martin struck first in the Chase, winning Sunday's Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Martin held on for three restarts in the last 25 laps to finish ahead of Denny Hamlin. Pole-sitter Juan Pablo Montoya, who led the most laps, was third. Jimmie Johnson was fourth and Kyle Busch fifth. With nine races to go, the Chase standings, with New Hampshire finish in parenthesis: Martin; Johnson, - 35 points; Hamlin, -35; Montoya, -55; Kurt Busch (sixth), -65; Tony Stewart (14th), -74; Ryan Newman (seventh), -79; Brian Vickers (11th), -90; Greg Biffle (ninth), -92; Jeff Gordon (15th), -102; Carl Edwards (16th), -110; Kasey Kahne (38th), -161. Also: Mark Martin signed a contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports through 2011… Pat Tryson will be Martin Truex Jr.'s crew chief at Michael Waltrip Racing next year… NASCAR announced the 2010 Cup, Nationwide and Truck schedules. All series will begin at Daytona Feb. 12-14 and end at Homestead Nov. 19-21. Number of events will be the same: 36 in Cup, 35 in Nationwide, 25 in Trucks. Pocono replaces California on the Truck tour… Kelly Bires will be Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s new Nationwide driver, taking over for Brad Keselowski, headed to Penske Racing… In the wake of an FIA investigation, Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds left the Renault Formula One team. Former team driver Nelson Piquet Jr. reportedly was told to intentionally crash at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. That brought out the safety car at the perfect time for teammate Fernando Alonso's pit strategy, and Alonso won the race… Joey Saldana took his 18th A-Feature win of the season in Saturday night's World of Outlaws event at Deer Creek Speedway in Minnesota. Return to Top NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Juan Pablo Montoya took the pole Friday at New Hampshire with a 133.431 mph lap. Sunday, Tony Stewart led the first lap, then, Montoya went around him. On a green pit stop, Stewart came out the leader on lap 38. On lap 66, Kasey Kahne retired with a blown engine. Montoya led exiting the pits. After a debris yellow, Kurt Busch was in front. Denny Hamlin led after banging side-by-side with Montoya. The 2000 Indy 500 winner went ahead and then there was a yellow for Erik Darnell. Kurt Busch spun David Ragan on pit road and the crew serviced Ragan's Ford even though it was backwards in the pit stall. Stewart was the leader. On lap 168, Joey Logano tagged Elliott Sadler with Robby Gordon, Michael Waltrip and Paul Menard involved. Jeff Burton spun on lap 176. On the restart, Jimmie Johnson was in front. David Stremme bumped the wall and, during the caution, Stewart's crew replaced the left-rear axle cap. He fell from fourth to 26th place. Mark Martin passed Kurt Busch for the lead with 96 laps left. Martin began a sequence of concluding green-flag stops with 57 laps remaining and reclaimed the top spot when Hamlin came in with 36 laps to go. There was a debris caution and then David Reutimann spun Dale Earnhardt Jr. (in the top five) with 19 laps to the finish. With seven laps left, A.J. Allmendinger spun. Martin and Montoya restarted alongside each other with three laps to go. Allmendinger wrecked again on the last lap. Martin averaged 100.753 mph with 11 cautions for 48 laps. Return to Top NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Kyle Busch took Saturday's Heluva Good 200 at New Hampshire. His Toyota was .560 second ahead of Ron Hornaday Jr., with Kevin Harvick third. Harvick, who owns Hornaday's Chevrolet, was frustrated that his teammate would not let him by so Kevin could take a run at Busch, who was stretching fuel mileage. Busch averaged 112.104 mph with three yellows for 14 laps, plus a red flag to repair the SAFER barrier. Hornaday is 217 points up on Matt Crafton (fourth). Return to Top NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series The Countdown opened with Sunday's Carolina Nationals and Cory McClenathan, Robert Hight, Mike Edwards and Hector Arana made it to the winner's circle. In Top Fuel, Cory Mac ran 3.857 seconds, 312.64 mph to Shawn Langdon's 3.980, 280.49 mph. Cory Mac is 10 points ahead of Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown. In Funny Car, Hight's Ford Mustang clocked 4.097, 307.02 mph to Matt Hagan's 4.103, 308.07 mph in a Dodge Charger. Tony Pedregon is one point ahead of Ashley Force Hood. Jack Beckman qualified eighth in the Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger and lost in the second round. In Pro Stock, Edwards' Pontiac GXP went 6.618, 209.39 mph vs. Greg Stanfield's 6.650, 207.75 mph in a GXP. Edwards tops Jeg Coughlin Jr. by 56 points. Ron Krisher didn't qualify in the Valvoline Chevrolet Cobalt. In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Arana won on a Buell with a 7.004, 189.31 mph pass as Karen Stoffer red-lighted on her Suzuki. Arana is nine points ahead of Eddie Krawiec. Spencer Massey in Top Fuel and Mike Neff in Funny Car won the four-wide exhibition races. Return to Top IndyCar SeriesScott Dixon has the championship lead by five points with one race to go after winning Saturday's Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi. Dixon began on the pole and took the lead for good on lap 164 of 200. He beat teammate Dario Franchitti by 1.4 seconds. Graham Rahal was third. Ryan Briscoe, who took the green as the title leader, lost control exiting the pits on lap 106. He hit the inner pit wall and collected a timing cone. He finished 18th, 15 laps down. Dixon averaged 163.400 mph with two yellows for 23 laps. Dixon, with five wins, is five points ahead of Franchitti and eight clear of Briscoe. Helio Castroneves crashed in practice, but wasn't hurt, while Tony Kanaan had his Q run disallowed due to a technical infraction. Return to Top Rolex Sports Car SeriesAlex Gurney and Jon Fogarty solidified their championship advantage with one race to go with a dominant win from the pole in Saturday's Utah 250 at Miller Motorsports Park. They led 43 of 56 laps in a Pontiac-Riley and got to the line 1.2 seconds ahead of Max Angelelli and Brian Frisselle in a Ford-Riley. Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas were third in a Lexus-Riley. Gurney took the lead for good on lap 30 and averaged 90.330 mph. Gurney/Fogarty are plus eight on Angelelli/Frisselle and plus 10 on Pruett/Rojas in points. In GT, Jeff Segal and Emil Assentato took the lead on the last lap to win in a Mazda RX-8. Return to Top Racer of the Week Cory McClenathan.
