The 2013 Bathurst 1000 was a wild battle between Ford and GM
Australia's biggest race didn't disappoint.

Big track, big power, big accidents, and big attachments; 29 cars tearing around the 3.86-mile Mount Panorama track 161 times in the premier event of the Australian V8 Supercar season: the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Mount Panorama is a roller coaster of a track with 23 corners and an amazing 575 feet of elevation change. Over the six-hour, 620-mile race, this translates into the cars climbing for 17.5 miles, enough to top Mount Everest three times. On the long downhill Conrod Straight, named after a potential engine-part failure, the  V8 Supercars reach speeds of 186 mph  before slowing to 75 mph for a sequence of corners named the Chase. :)

Big speed means there are no small crashes. This year saw its share of hard hits, fortunately without serious consequence for the drivers. One kangaroo, however, was not so lucky.

Fans love the event, and those at the trackcelebrate by consuming truly epic amounts of beer, despite attempts by authorities to impose limits. Very conservative estimates put the amount at 96,000 cans of ale downed this year, enough to line the track two times over.

The 2013 race came down to a classic duel between Ford and GM's Holden division. At the start of the final lap, race leader Mark Winterbottom in the Ford Performance Racing Falcon made a small mistake, which allowed defending champion Jamie Whincup in the Red Bull-sponsored Holden to get a run on him. Side by side for the last time up the mountain, the race came down to who would be able to carry the most speed though the treacherous series of sweeping, blind corners. Neither driver flinched, but Whincup's car slid just enough for "Frosty" Winterbottom to get away and score the first win for an official factory-backed Ford entry since 1977.

Racing does not get much better than this. Watch some highlights below.
