by Stanley Yee on 05.10.2014 01:30The Verizon IndyCar Series is at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend, starting off a busy month leading up to the Indy 500. This weekend’s race will be the first time that IndyCar has run on the Indianapolis road course.
Using the Indianapolis road course layout previously seen in Formula One and MotoGP, IndyCar drivers will have to navigate a circuit new to the series. The road course layout remains similar to the one used for Formula One and MotoGP, with the exception of a small layout change to promote closer racing. Additionally, the infield section of the road course has been repaved.
Weather forecasts predict rain throughout the weekend, and the rain has already made its way through the area. Though the series fully intends on running even if the conditions are wet, the final segment of qualifying has already seen a red flag due to torrential downpours. This was also seen at the last race in Alabama, when rain put a lengthy delay on the race start.
This weekend’s Grand Prix of Indianapolis will be the first IndyCar event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this month, with the Indy 500 taking place on May 25.
The Firestone Fast Six Qualifying session, after a small red flag delay due to heavy rain, saw the top drivers battling for position, quickly improving on each others times as track conditions improved. Long Beach polesitter Ryan Hunter-Reay was caught out by the rain, spinning into the barriers onto the front straight. Uninjured, his accident triggered the second red flag of the session, and the officials decided to call an end to what little time remained in the session.
Sebastian Saavedra ended up on top of the timing sheets, winning the pole position for the race. Behind Saavedra was Hawksworth with his best qualifying performance thus far, followed by Hunter-Reay, Pagenaud, Will Power, and finally Scott Dixon in sixth place. This marks the first pole position for Saavedra, who qualified two tenths ahead of Hawksworth. However, with the top four championship leaders in the Top Six, Saavedra will have his work cut out for him for the race.
Despite Saturday’s rain, the forecast for race day calls for partly sunny skies with temperatures in the 70s. Dry track pace seen in early practice sessions show just how tough the competition is, with the entire field never more than 2 seconds adrift of the lead time.
The 2014 IndyCar Grand Prix of Indianapolis will air on May 10 on ABC at 3:30PM EST.

Indy car racing is not so exciting, especially in person. They don't usually drive tracks where you can watch 'em much.

Kurt Busch will be trying to make the Indy 500 this year, so that might be interesting

More into Nascar but that was very exciting for 3 minutes of racing.
