Our country is known for its oval tracks, but the less obvious truth is that the U.S. is also home to some of the finest road-racing courses in the world. The great circuits featured here generally date back to a time when racetracks were supposed to have elevation changes, blind corners, and distinct personalities. Most of the ones built in the past two decades are relatively similar to each other and essentially drama-free, designed to be safe rather than challenging. In the good old days, danger was an accepted part of the deal, and we think a scintilla of fear makes for a more challenging competition venue. Of course, we aren’t featuring all of them—some stellar circuits, such as Mid-Ohio, didn’t make the ultimate cut, and this will certainly inspire heated arguments. But, hey, isn’t that what the internet is for?
And definitely take time to watch the hugely informative videos embedded on the following pages. Created by our friends at iRacing.com completely within their proprietary simulator software—it powers a highly accurate online racing experience, one used as a training tool by professional drivers like Alex Gurney, Justin Wilson, and Dale, Jr.—the clips feature an in-depth walkthrough of a lap at each of these historic road courses.

I have to go with the local choice, Laguna Seca. I was a volunteer for several years, directing traffic was the job. My favorite corner to work was at turn 9, just before the grandstands. Back then it was a super sharp hairpin turn so even when I couldn't watch the action I would hear the the motors just a howling out of that corner.

Here's a recent shot of what I think is a tame version of T9

The corkscrew gets more attention and is a good place to photograph cars. But the sounds of gears shifting and revs were my passion.

I personally like Road America - been there a couple of times to watch the vintage racing.
But let's not forget the long lost tracks Like Meadowdale Raceway in Carpentersville, IL. That was ranked as one of the top tracks in it's day. There is a organization called MIRPA who is trying to keep the memories alive. It's totally overgrown and is a forest preserve now. They have a car show there once a year to celebrate it.

Here in Utah we have a fairly new track, but it is garnering a reputation as one of the top tracks in the U.S. It's really known to be very forgiving in that if you run off the track you typically will just slide to a stop as there are next to no solid obstacles to strike.
