Winter is Gone - Now a lot of Work!
Well... Winter is gone, and I have a lot of work to restore to Monte Back to Flawless condition. Road salt has left it ugly mark on my baby. Scratches in the hood, a chip on the rear bumber (1/4"), nicks on the front bumper. I got the wet sand, paint, polish, polish, polish, and glaze, seal, and wax. But by the end of the week she will be standing tall again.
So how did your car fair the winter? |
RE: Winter is Gone - Now a lot of Work!
Hi `Craig, Mother Nature sure can make it difficult on our vehicles, but I'm sure with your experience/knowledge, that you will have yours back in showroom condition. It would be great to see before & after pic's. Also, the products you use, and the time it took to return it to top condition. Look forward to your future posts, and hopefully pic's : ) Good Luck on your Challenge, Peace/Happiness, from `Space |

ORIGINAL: Propitious So how did your car fair the winter? I did have someone scrape up my bumper in the parking lot so that needs covered, along with several more door dings from morons here at UW. She's still looking nice and perdy, atleast she was yesterday, hope that snow this morning didn't have much dirt in it as it's sunny now. |
RE: Winter is Gone - Now a lot of Work!
Now that it's nice spring weather, I gotta do a complete cleaning and detailing job inside and out. Biggest pain in the a** is gonna be shampooing the salt stains out of the carpet (black).

RE: Winter is Gone - Now a lot of Work!
Sorry Space... I tried twice to take pictures both in regular mode and in Macro, but the scratches don't show up, but the dust on the car looked like it was covered in sand in macro mode...lol
The scratches are fine, and most are probably in the protective wax and not the paint itself. There are a couple that will need to be wet sanded to get them and the chip needs to be spread out so I can blend the paint, but I promise you will not even know it was there. |
RE: Winter is Gone - Now a lot of Work!
Craig, MI had some great weather over the weekend. You could have used some of this to start the clean up on your beautiful SS Monte.
We went to supper inDundee saturday evening and it was so nice outside. It made me want to eat out there instead of inside. On the way home we stopped at a Shell station to wash the dust off the Monte. Afterall, we had to look our best out there on the interstate. |
RE: Winter is Gone - Now a lot of Work!
Just finished cleaning and conditioning the leather seats.
Tomorrow's project... carpet cleaning. Providing the rain holds off. |
RE: Winter is Gone - Now a lot of Work!
I was lucky enough to avoid salt stains on the carpets this winter but I had a nice build up of dirt and dog hair (which is funny cause my dog never rides in my car). I just cleaned, vacuumed and waxed my car this weekendand its looking nice but I need to take the clay bar to the paint. I think it may need glazed too but I will see after I claybar it. Hopefully it will just need a nice coat of wax.

RE: Winter is Gone - Now a lot of Work!
My baby didn't fare too badly. I just had the weather stripping on the rear window repaird, that was about it. We didn't drive it much though because of the intake leaking so it sat... :o( I knew when we bought the car that she was going to be a project car...The body looks great in pictures, but there are a TON of little paint chips on the mirrors, front bumper, and a nice scratch on the passenger side of the bumper...The leather NEEDS to be cleaned and rid of that pesky house paint that is set in (I can't believe the previous owner let his daughter's boyfriend drive the car to a work site and he stained the leather!!!), and the center console needs some SERIOUS work. Speaking of serious, well, sirius, that is; I LOVE the satellite radio and I have hidden all the wires, so that is one project that is completed!! So here's the list: Continue treatment on rims to rid of stubborn brake dust stains, condition and clean leather, touch up paint, fix moonroof, clean center console, vaccuum interior and buy floormats!

ORIGINAL: Taz Biggest pain in the a** is gonna be shampooing the salt stains out of the carpet (black). I use the big/thick rubber mats so that I don't have the "salt stain" issues. Course, with the blue carpet in my '87 MC LS, it doesn't look as bad anyway ;). As for the exterior ... not as bad as I thought it was. But, I have a feeling when I clean (wash/wax/etc.) it the first time, I'll find a bunch of stuff I don't want to find. BUT ... it IS a driver, so, I will see those as a sign of a car that never let me down once ... and ALWAYS started this winter, regardless of the temps/conditions. I use big thick rubber mats too, but somehow the wetness still manages to get underneath the mat on the driver's side. The salt stains are mostly around the two plastic foot rests inlaid in the carpet. The rest of the carpet in the driver's area is just dirty from dirty snow. The rest of the carpet inside the car should just need a good vacuuming with the shop vac.
As for the winter beater idea... I wish I could put the Monte away for the winter and buy a beater. Right now I don't have a garage to store the car, and don't have the finances to afford renting a garage, buying and insuring a winter beater. If/when I buy a newer house, I'm gonna insist on it having a garage. I'm not crazy about having tokeep my car outside. Especially the odd time when we get hail storms. Even though we only get it once or twice a year, I cringe every time I hear it. |
RE: Winter is Gone - Now a lot of Work!
Well, this past weekend I spent detailing my Mini Cooper (its my daily driver-Monte is still in storage). First I washed it, then I clay bared it. Then I used an orbital buffer with Meguiars #9 and lastly I used Meguairs NXT Tech Wax 2.0. I still have to go back and use a coarser polish to get acouple of the deeper scratches out. But I am very happy with the results!

RE: Winter is Gone - Now a lot of Work!
well, college gave it a beating. My underbody lights held up, which I was impressed because of how many peoples around here broke from the snow and harsh cold. Im in BAD need of getting it detailed to try to get some scratches out, not counting the multiple small gashes here and there from people pushing carts away and hitting it and stuff. :(
