need to fix a/c

ok so i have yet to get my compressor spinning and i am asumming there is zero refrigerant seeing as the car sat for years in my uncles yard can and should i do the recharge myself or wait for my dads mechanic to do it the humid is bad here in mass. i saw in a video that if its empty it wont spin right?

If it is low or empty it won't spin to save it from damage.

If it is empty I wouldn't try it yourself, it will just leak again.

The a/c system is a closed system similar to the engine coolant. It doesn't go away unless you have a leak. If you have a leak then that needs to be fixed first. The best thing to do is pressurize it with nitrogen, find your leak and fix it. While the system is open you should also replace the filter dryer. Close the system with the new parts and leak check again with nitrogen. If you find you have no leak then it is time to put a vaccuum pump on the system and pull a good vaccuum to remove all air and moisture from the system. Once you have the desired vaccuum now you can charge the system and hope that your compressor will run. If not you need to change the compressor and restart the procedure that I detailed above. There are more details that I omitted but this is most of it. A/C work requires specialized tools but it isn't that difficult.
