Good morning guys, happy August! I can't get 90% of the Blog post #1 content to center justify with this new system so it is what it is...

Where we are, we did get probably 1.0-1.5" of rain late yesterday through the overnight. There were other areas of Metro Detroit that received 3.0"+. And we got our new roof yesterday! They were able to finish 98% before the first band of rain moved through and were able to finish and clean up once it let up.

We have a 12/12 pitch. They did a pretty good job and quick too, all in one day. All existing roof sheathing looked good. We had them remove the gutter guards that were on the house because those things can actually create more issues. They do still need to remove and properly install new copper flashing above our front bay windows as well as re-pitch one gutter and add a downspout. Of course all of the existing (original) flashing wasn't installed properly, because who'd want to do that?

Wow 12/12 is challenging to shingle for sure. I sold a bunch of 12/12 roof truss jobs and most of them had to be 2 piece units. A few years back my son in law told me he put in a whole house fan and he said he cut the trusses and I asked him if he got a repair for it for the modification. He blew me off and thought I was nuts told it would be fine and all that. The next day he apologized to me and said he looked this all up online and I was right. Duh!! lol. I only did that for 16 years. Anyway he was lucky the repair was easy. The cost of the design wasn't it cost him several $ to get that one. Probably would have been cheaper to ask me first and we could have located the thing in a different spot.
The roofers should never remove the gutters and replace them they never get it right. the drainage is always an issue especially when it gets into my basement.
I have the gutter screens on mine they are in 4ft sections and just lay under the first course and hook to the gutter.
I have to many trees and they fill up with debris all the time.
In the back I have a valley over the corner of the deck which is always iffy, when we get a gully washer and a few years ago I had the gutters replaced and I had them make me a gusher guard for the corner that extends about 8 ft. both ways. That has helped a ton to keep the water out of the basement in that one location.
I should just cover the deck with that tinted lexan sheet and slope it to the end but Mrs. Bickerson says no. she doesn't have to get the rug doctor out in the basement either?

That's why they didn't do the gutter work then but they did remove all the old gutter guards - listed in our work contract. We had the solid seemless 'cover' style, that also go up under the starter course. From the research I did, and from what I was told, those can actually do more harm than good and, in heavy rainfalls, the rain can actually shoot off and over the gutter instead of actually going in the gutter. They're basically a gimmick. We back up to woods and have a moderately wooded lot so we also have a bunch of trees. I have a 28' extension ladder so I'll be cleaning the gutters myself or having a service clean them for me late fall.

The house is circa 1996 so it was the original roof and they did do a full tear-off.

I know the copper flashing is being done by another guy who specializes in copper work.

And I still need to re-seal around some of the windows at the window/brick interface. Improvements, slow and steady. :thumbsup:

I am familiar with that style of gutter guard, This gal at the Home show was telling me all about them and how many Gallon per min. they would be good for, She was in the Noah flood range for sure, Lol She told me they were guaranteed too. i said against what, she said they will work. So I said if they fail you fix all the damage they caused. She said we can't do that if you install them wrong, I said but you just told me your crews are the only ones that can install them. She excised herself and left for the restroom. Lol The ones I have now I got at Menards white vinyl with a screen on them about 48 inches long and they work real good. The home we have was built in 71, with a 4/12 roof the Ice doesn't get them to out of shape, I still need to clean them off after the trees do there spring molt. But if they go to seed then the gutters will fill with the seeds looks like a Football Stadium and they are all doing the WAVE. lol

Good morning guys.

Apparently, in all that rain that came through SE MI yesterday, there was a brief, weak EF0 tornado touchdown in Taylor, MI at 12:44 am in the overnight hours. It was on the ground for 0.8 mile and did produce some damage to trees, signs and three structures. The highest recorded rainfall in our area was 3.52" in Southfield, MI.

And I guess we have the chance for more scattered t-storms later today/tonight.
