keeping a 350 rotating assembly from moving

so I a 350 in my pickup and I'm trying to get the harmonic balancer off with a balancer remover but it keeps rotating the crank. is there any way to keep it from spinning while I'm trying to get the balancer off?

Hold onto the balancer with one hand and operate the puller with the other. It is MUCH easier if you could have someone help you hold the balancer in one place as you work the puller.I don't recall mine moving that easily when I pulled mine to change the cam and timing chain/gear.
At what point are you I the process?
There is a large center bolt and then three smaller bolts to be removed. Make sure you use a NEW nut when you put the balancer back on!!
Anyway, use a pry bar to wedge against the block to keep it from moving. You might want to take your cell phone and put it down there and take a pic to see what you are dealing with. Once you get the pulley off, then you make sure the puller is centered in the hole where the large bolt came out of the crank. then make sure the arms of the puller are spaced evenly apart (that is a trick in itself) and start tightening the puller. you should really have very little movement of the crank as the puller will be pulling straight back toward the front of the car. Let me try to find some pics once I go to work. They were all on my old phone and I don't know if I have any here on the computer.

Can you put a long screwdriver through the puller to make "handle" to hold to prevent rotation?

dad suggested feeding some rope into a cylinder and stopping it that way. he did it on another engine of ours so we'll try it if its not so windy tomorrow. Holding the balancer wasn't working at all and neither did the screwdriver. as far as how torn apart the engine is I just have the rockers, pushrods and lifters out.

well the rope idea worked on getting the balancer off. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the lower timing gear off? Autozone's 3 jaw puller broke so...

I don't know of any other way. I used the 3 jaw puller.
