how did you learn to work on engines?

When i was just about 5 dad set me up on the fender of his 60 Buick my legs dangling into the engine compartment (was as large as a walk-in closet :rotfl:) . He'd hand me a bunch of tools and when he asked for a tool I'd hand him what he wanted (most times). He gently correct me if I handed him the wrong one.

I just started digging in... which is why I don't know a whole lot compared to some people my age, but it makes it more fun to learn and experiment (most experimenting takes place at the junk yard lol)

my dad is a service manager at a Chrysler jeep dodge and ram dealership where i live so i'm at the shop everyday just helping the techs out with whatever they need help with just to learn some stuff. i don't get paid or anything but to me its worth more than being paid just to get to spend the time being down there and learning stuff.

Started with my dad(mostly on his 70 Chrysler 300 convertable with a 440 big block:thumbsup:) then school an general learn as you go:thumbsup:

Trial and error. I am self taught and have about 24 years experience. I have done everything from oil changes to motor swaps and just about everything in between. I don't think I could have done some of these repairs without a haynes or chilton manual. Now I just use the net.

From working on my demolition derby cars. Putting a small block Chevy engine into a Ford Crown Victoria is a fairly easy task for me now and I'm only 19 lol. I know more than a lot of people my age, but I have a long ways to go.

My step-brother and I got our drivers licenses about the same time and my father said it's time we start learning to work on cars. Began with learning how to do an oil change and as my cars broke and my dad helped me with them, I continued to learn more and more with each repair. And that's how it started.
