GM to back vehicles for 100,000 miles
It's about time GM made this move.... This will make it more attractive to buy GM...
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- General Motors on Wednesday took a cue from Hyundai and announced a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, a move aimed at igniting sluggish sales as it did for the resurgent Korean brand in 1999.
GM's stock bucked broader market weakness to trade up 3.6% at $31.52.
The warranty plan spans all eight GM brands, beginning with the entire crop of 2007 cars and trucks, and carries no deductible. It's also retroactive to the 2007 models already sold and includes expanded roadside assistance and courtesy transportation.
The company claims it's "the best warranty of any full-line automaker." GM's current warranties had mostly mirrored the industry standard of 36,000 miles.
"We've been telling everyone how strong GM's cars and trucks are in terms of value, design, quality and durability. Now we're going to back it up," said Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner. "The bottom line is GM now has the best coverage in the industry."
Prior to today's announcement, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Kia were the only carmakers offering new owners a 100,000-mile, 10-year powertrain warranty.
But GM's warranty is fully transferable to a new owner within the period, whereas Kia's and Hyundai's warranties are not, a GM spokesman said, adding that the 10-year aspect is only an advantage for those who hold the car longer than five years, and most do not.
According to Edmunds.com, the best offer from a U.S. company was a 100,000-mile warranty on some Ford models, but that, like the new GM offer, expires after just five years.
Honda , which have been gobbling up market share in North America, offer a five-year, 60,000-mile drivetrain warranty, while their luxury Acura and Lexus brands bump up coverage to six years and 70,000 miles.
For full bumper-to-bumper coverage, the most comprehensive coverage again comes from Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Kia, all offering 60,000 miles good for five years.
GM has made strides in improving the quality of its products in recent years, but it still takes a back seat to Toyota when it comes to perceived dependability.
"GM recognizes that it needs to improve the perception of their vehicle ownership experience," said Edmunds.com President Jeremy Anwyl. "That will take time, but it is an important component in the company's effort to grow its market share."
The extended warranty approach, which could prove costly if quality slips, will ideally help GM forge ahead with its strategy of relying less on cash incentives to lure buyers to dealer showrooms. End of Story

2007 Avalanche, here I come!!! I have been debating whether I should get the current style Avalanche or the new one (with 320hp and more options for cheaper price). I like the styling of both, but was considering the older one because a bench in the front has more leg room than the '07 with it's larger dash midsection.
This announcement made my decision for me.
Sorry, Monte lovers...I am really a truck man at heart. But, I still love my monte. I will trade my wife's car to get the avalanche.
