Chevrolet Silverado Overview

From a trim level of Chevrolet C/K pickups, to one of the most popular trucks in the country, theChevrolet Silverado is incredibly popular. Who could forget the “Like a Rock” campaign? From agriculture to construction to commuting, Chevy trucks are everywhere. Today, we’re taking a look at the history of the Chevrolet Silverado through the years. The truck market wouldn’t be the same without the Silverado.

Chevrolet C/K Pickup Trucks (1975 – 1999)

  • The term “Silverado” was first used to identify trim level in C/K pickups, Tahoes, and Suburbans.
1st Generation (1999 – 2006)

  • After redesigning the Chevy truck lineup in 1999, Chevrolet finally dubbed their new generation as the Chevy Silverado.
  • 3 engine options were available: 4.3L V6, 4.8L V8, and 5.3L V8.
  • The Silverado used the same numbers as the C/K series to identify weight: 1500 = ¼ ton, 2500 = ½ ton, and 3500 = ¾ ton.
  • In 2000, HD (heavy-duty) versions of the Silverado were introduced. HD trucks were more capable and powerful than their light-duty counterparts.
  • This truck was refreshed in 2002, with an updated exterior, and upgraded HVAV and audio controls.
  • In 2003, Chevrolet launched a Silverado SS, a performance-oriented pickup truck with a 6.0L V8 engine that produced around 345 hp.
  • Chevrolet introduced a Silverado Hybrid in 2004, though production was very limited initially. It wasn’t a true hybrid either, it was a “mild hybrid.”
2nd Generation (2007 – 2013)

  • In 2007, the Silverado was redesigned with bold headlamps, more chrome on the grille, an updated interior, and much more.
  • The Silverado won the 2007 North American Truck of the Year
  • A 6.2L V8 engine was added as a new option on the Silverado 1500, which produced 403 hp and 417 lb. ft. of torque.
  • The 8.1L V8 engine was eliminated.
  • In 2008, the manual transmission was removed from the US lineup.
  • Between 2009 and 2010, Chevrolet refreshed the front fascia and bumper of Silverado 1500s, and added new interior door panels.
  • By 2014, the Silverado offered features like USB, real-time traffic/navigation, remote keyless entry, power sunroof, power sliding rear window, DVD entertainment system, and more.
3rd Generation (2014 – )

  • In 2014, Silverado gained stronger engines, more tech, more interior space, and an upscale exterior design.
  • The Silverado 1500 offered a 4.3L V6, a 5.3L V8, and a 6.2L V8.
  • Chevy has introduced special editions throughout this generation: Rally, Midnight, Black Out, Custom Sport, and Real Tree.
  • The Silverado 1500 currently has a towing capacity of up to 12,000 lbs.
  • Notable features include an 8-inch touch screen, Hill Descent Control, Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, wireless phone charging, power-adjustable pedals, heated and cooled seats, and more.
Chevrolet Silverado Fast Facts
  • Celebrities like Luke Bryan, Shia LaBeouf, and Tyler Hubbard have all driven Chevrolet Silverados.
  • In 2006, Chevrolet built an Intimidator SS in honor of the late Dale Earnhardt. Less than 1000 were made.
  • The Silverado is called the Cheyenne in Mexico.
