Can't buy gas with debit cards anymore???
 

I was running low on gas this morning, and I figured I'd better fill up before I jumped on I-94 for my few miles that I do. I stopped at the Shell station to fill up, swiped my debit card, and it asked if debit or credit. I said debit, and it came back "debit cards are no longer accepted here. Transaction canceled."

WTF!!!

I CONTINUALLY have problems with the Shell stations around here, and this is only the 2nd time I've ever stopped there.

But WTF? Is this a trend? I called my bank and asked if this is becoming standard. I quit using credit cards, and don't typically buy gas with cash because everything is prepay now.

Who else has run into this? The wife says it's the Shell stations forcing you to use their credit cards. I say it's the Shell stations forcing me to buy gas somewhere else.

Might be merchant fees the station has to pay to accept debit cards, someone's in a tiff over it and they aint working.

I still am able to use debit at Costco gas, otherwise it's a gas credit card that I pay in full every month.

i just run my debit card as credit and it works just fine....sometimes if i pay at the pump and select debit it will say i dont have enuff money when there will be 300-400 dollars in there

My credit union has a sign up that says it is much more secure to run it as a credit. Also faster, no pins to enter. I would start running as a credit and it should work.

Just filled in Shell with Debit, no problem.

I just use credit card. and pay it of when bill come. they don't like that ....

I still use my debit card no problems. Tho there are no shell stations in my area. GE getgo takes debit.

I was at home (west MI) this past weekend and the same thing happened to me at our local Wesco gas station. I selected debit and it automatically cancelled my transaction. Once I pushed credit, everything was fine.
