In the early 20th century, the old Dodge Main plant there built cars for the competition. In the 1980s, a new factory on the same land became the home of Cadillac production.

Today, General Motors (NYSE:GM) says its Hamtramck plant will be the home of the next-generation Chevrolet Impala full-size sedan.
The plant, surrounded by the city of Detroit but within the city of Hamtramck, had most recently been the production home of the Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne. Last year, GM began building the Chevy Volt at the facility, helped along with generous tax breaks designed to spur development and production of fuel-efficient vehicles.
Earlier this year, GM confirmed it would also build its new mid-size 2013 Malibu in Hamtramck.
With the switch from the Impala's current home in Oshawa, Ontario, the Hamtramck plant will be almost completely devoted to Chevrolet production. The Opel Ampera, Europe's version of the Volt, will account for the small percentage of non-Chevrolet cars assembled at the Poletown plant.
GM says the move will add two shifts of production and approximately 2500 jobs at the site. Between the retooling costs for the Impala and the Malibu, GM is spending nearly $200 million to refurbish the plant, once the Lucerne and DTS are done with their long production runs.
The announcement also sheds some light on the evolution of the Impala, once one of GM's hallmark rear-drive sedans. The Impala is expected to share some major underpinnings with the upcoming Cadillac XTS sedan. Sharing an assembly site with the front-drive Malibu could mean the Impala also has some commonality with that car and its "Epsilon II" architecture, as well as with the Buick LaCrosse--and even the Saab 9-5, a legacy of GM's ownership of that Swedish automaker.

The aging Chevrolet Impala is finally getting a major overhaul for the 2014 model year, and General Motors has just shoveled $69 million into its Detroit-Hamtramck plant to support production of the next-generation sedan. According to Automotive News, GM will work on repositioning the Impala within Chevrolet's lineup. Currently, the automaker feels that there is too much price overlap between the Impala and smaller Malibu.

Automotive News reports that the 2014 Impala will be built on the longer version of GM's Epsilon platform, destined for use under the new Cadillac XTS flagship. The new, larger Impala will offer more standard equipment than the smaller Malibu, and the two cars will be positioned similar to how the Taurus and Fusion are within Ford's lineup.

In an effort to keep the Impala fresh until its overhaul, GM has fitted the car with the 3.6-liter direct-injected V6 found elsewhere in the automaker's portfolio, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The first sales of the 2014 Impala are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2013.

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala specs will be using platform from Epsilon II. It will be a fuel economy ride, with front wheel lineup model. It’s also equipped with front wheel driving architecture so that the car will have better model and packaging. There won’t be any driveshaft to hinder the drivers’ performance. Thanks to the revised platform, the new Impala will be using lighter aluminum, newer power electronic steering, and aerodynamic performance, just like the one implemented in Malibu Eco or Cruze Eco.

The company is focusing on the performance and eco fuel feature instead of overall model and style, so they’re informing the Impala fans out there not to hold their hopes too high. The new car will have highway EPA rating around 30 mpg, new refined interior sides, and reduction in the cabin noise.

I don't think it's Hideous, & I hope they improve their concept, but it's still going to be a FWD built for MPG's...I don't think I will be waiting in line 2 buy one : (

Why has Chevy waited so long to update the Impala? Why wait until 2014? How about 2012?? They've been using that same design on the Impala since the 2006 model year. It's high time for a change.

LMAO at that line about the Impala having "bad boy style written all over it". Not in the current gen Impala, that's for sure.

I don't care for the concept car above either.

They are giving the 2012 Impala the honeycomb grille.

Gross. Bad boy style? To who, a toddler? It looks like every other sedan out there. The SS's power is the only remarkable thing about it. The concept looks like a cross between a new Civic and a Camaro. Make it into a badass car like it used to be, or keep the styling to an average sedan if it won't live up to the power associated with intense styling. Come on, GM... :(

I hope they don't screw this one up.
