A huge crowd watched as former GM giant Bob Lutz and designer Henrik Fisker debuted the Force 1 today on the Detroit auto show floor. The car is visually stunning in person, and a top speed of 218 mph doesn't hurt its appeal.

The Force 1 can hit 0-60 in just 3 seconds, VLF Automotive says. Under the sheetmetal is an 8.4-liter V-10 engine making 745 hp and 638 lb-ft of torque. The model, of course, was designed by Fisker, who also penned the Fisker Karma. Price? Just $268,500 to start.

At the press conference, VLF said that the auto market needs "an American sports car with no excuses." So it's no wonder the curtains came off to the soundtrack of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." Production on the model will take place in late April in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Complementing the car's unique air intakes on the hood and its beautiful shape are 21-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires. Inside, look for leather and Alcantara materials, as well as a champagne holder.
VLF Automotive isn't seeking large volume or exclusive dealers. "If we do close to 100 cars in 2016, we'll be very satisfied," Lutz said at a press conference. Once the company expands to Europe, Asia, and particularly China, those numbers could grow. Lutz also says the company isn't in competition with the new Karma Automotive, formerly known as Fisker Automotive. Green plug-in hybrids and high performance sports cars are apples and oranges in this case.
"We want to be America's only purveyor of bespoke high-end luxury cars," Lutz said at the press conference. Initially, only 50 units of the Force 1 will be available, through Ben Keating's Viper Exchange. The company also has the updated Destino sedan in its portfolio.
