i have a 95 monte carlo z34. the problem I am having is an oil leak, smoking and smokes when idle. I have checked the oil, and it's not milky. there is only smoke when it idles for a long time, but it does not overheat. any suggestions??

 

Okay, I'll ask the obvious just to get it out of the way. Did you fill it with deisel?

appears the oil leak is leaking right above the transmission. the car has 109,000 original miles on it. I have owned it for about a year. the original owner (1st, and i'm the 2nd) used it mainly for local travel.

 

Hi `Z,
First, I'm not a tech, but it sounds like a leaking gasket (?)
If there's smoke at prolong idle the leak is most likely falling
on the header & burning, but when your Z is moving the smoke is blown away & not noticed.

Your Z is over 16 years old & gaskets will fail, & bolts can loosen...If you are not a mechanic, I would find one to inspect your Monte, or a friend that has more knowledge.

Please check back to see what our experts tech member's suggest. It could just be a bad valve cover gasket, or one that needs tighten...Good Luck

 

that has the 3.4 DOHC right?

It does sound like a gasket issue but on the DOHC that can be a pain, I would take it to a local shop ASAP to see if they can diagnose the problem

 

Theres a recall on some years of MonteCarlos,...for just that thing(oil leaks on thehot plugs, exhaust manifold)....sounds like a gasket for sure to me....but you might be past the recall notice with the mileage u have......that prevents the Oil from hiting the hot plugs and exhaust manifold...I hope you dont park in a garage,,,theres a possibility of it catching FIRE!..id call your local dealer and see if your Monte is on the recall list !!! First and Fast....

 

I can't see the coolant and oil making a fire in the garage honestly...

here's the 95 recalls, nothing gasket related.

 

I had a recall on my 99.......for oil leak related issues ...That will cause it to catch fire....from a manifold leak....but i had already replaced both upper and lower...so mine wasnt an issue.....But if u happen to watch the show ...Hardcore Pawn......they actually had 1 catch on fire in there parking lot.......Maybe there isnt 1 for his older style Monte? (recall)
