Want to start treating my monte right

Hey all, this is PhthaloPhone I'm in my mid-twenties from Florida. I own a 2004 monte carlo that my dad bought in 2006. Two weeks ago my parents handed me a bill of sale packet and title and told me "It's your problem now." I spent the last week getting insurance and a new license plate/registration in order.

I'm excited that it's officially mine now after 10 years of it being a family car, but unfortunately it's been a bit neglected and has its share of dings, dents, cracks and rusting spots. Other problems with it included a leaking transmission pan that I had fixed yesterday, a bad gas cap got swapped out, bad battery I replaced, corroded battery cable/bolts I stripped and scrubbed then replaced anyway, and the dreaded passlock "Security" problem.

It's been a busy two weeks for someone who's never really thought of car maintenance before. Anyway all the googling I've been doing kept bringing me back to posts on this forum so I thought I would join! Also all this repair work has me excited to begin treating my monte right and attempting to make up for past neglect. He's got 131,000 miles and a heart of gold.

Welcome and glad it is staying in the family; What engine is in it?

Thanks guys! I will post photos soon, although it will be a bit embarrassing compared to the shiny and sleek cars I've seen here so far. I'm going to have to learn how to properly wax car as well!

My monte is an LS with 3.4 liter V6 engine. I'm under the impression that it has the bare minimum of it's generation.

3400s are great engines - just don't let them overheat, you'll have cylinder head issues. I have several. The major downside is modding them leaves a lot to be desired - but for a daily driver they are fine.
