Introducing myself

Hey, I just got a 2002 Monte Carlo SS today with 18k miles! I'm looking to put exhaust and intake on there first so I'll be searching around the forum to see what people suggest for brands and such. What should I know about this car btw? Any major or common problems? I'll also search around here for a stats sheet or something. Anyway, I'm Mark and hopefully I'll be sticking around here for a while.

Hello Mark,

Welcome to the forum!!!

In general, these cars are pretty good. Weak points from my end: trans if it is a NA 3.8L, ignition cylinder and switch and last but not least the steering linkage issue unless it has already been taken care of. The LS, 3.4L has it's own set of much larger known problems.

Can I fix any of those problems before they happen? I noticed that you commonly suggest the Remus exhaust, why is that?

There is a TSB out on the steering linkage issue, the trans IMO is the weakest link in the drive train. Some last forever and some take the dive early. It's kind of a crap shot. Just make sure you flush it every 30K, if you have not done it @ 30K don't do it at all. Same thing with the ignition, I guess I threw that in there because I just had to have mine replaced @ 30K. Speaking with other GM owners the ignition too is one of those hit or miss things.

I don't think I have ever mentioned Remus exhaust. Borla maybe....??
