Alternator
I have a parts car can a 2001 Monte Carlo fit into a 2005 Monte Carlo? |
Depends. If it's a 3800 in both cars, should fit without issue. But if one is a 3400 and the other a 3800, I do not believe the alts interchange between them.
|
Both are 3.4L |
Then you should be in luck! Should be a direct swap.
One thing, the position of the thick red wire may differ between the years. I know in the Grand Am 3400 world about midway in 2002 GM changed the position of that wire. Not sure if GM did this with the 3400 Montes. It's NOT a deal breaker, but would explain if the part looks different between the cars. |
Awesome news!!! Thanks so much 😊 |
Unfortunately the back bolts are different ☹️ Cause it now means I buy a new alternator |
That seems extremely strange. I just looked up the two years of parts on RockAuto. The biggest issue I see is the 2001 has a 102amp alt and the 2005 uses a 105amp alt (and that change should not make an issue). Looking at the pics of all the different brands of alts for the two years, they look like the casings are the same shape/size. Since you have both units side by side, can you compare them on a bench? Anything noticeably different?

I will let you know tomorrow when the parts are both out! Would this problem cause my engine light to come on as well or not?
|
In the event you have an Alternator that is going bad it will draw down the Battery.
This could be the source of the Battery light on you instrument panel. Sometimes a bad alternator will kill a new battery as well just a little (fyi). This has happened to me before. |
Ya think I maybe going through that right now. First it was the starter (original part 2005) now my battery light comes on. Thinking my battery was a dud went and got a changer to charge battery and seems it’s not holding a charge 11.34 hovering around there 12 when car is started. Weird thing is I had my alternator bench tested and came back fine. But when I reinstalled alternator light still came on.. Back to the drawing board. Gonna swap parts car alternator (if possible) and see what happens. |
