Transmission howling/whining

Hello. My 2006 LT, 3.5L with a 4T65-E has a progressive howl/whine that increases in volume and pitch with the increase of speed (started off quiet, months later it is very loud esp. at ~60 - 80 mph).

Any thoughts as to what it could be?

Can this be repaired with the transmission still in the vehicle?

The fluid is a nice pink color, not burnt, and no bubbles. It was recently rebuilt (like 16 months ago) and the shop that did it wants $80 to diagnose it. I believe this wasn’t rebuilt correctly, should last at least 3 years.

Hearing the terms "howl" and "whine" make me suspect the wheel hubs.
Does the sound change if you steer to the left or right? Has anyone lifted the car in the air and inspected the wheel hubs for play in them?

No, no change when the wheel is turned either direction.

And both wheel hubs and drive axles were checked.

How many miles are on the car? I am suspicious of hubs or bearings as well. That would explain why it gradually gets louder as speed increases.

303,xxx and she’s well maintained. I’ve replaced wheel bearings, know what they sound like when bad. Replaced the right CV axle this year, the left is original and seems in good condition. The transmission was rebuilt 07/2017.

Possible that its' the tires then at this point?

Sounds like you've checked the usual culprits. I also would have leaned towards hubs from the first post. Were the rear ones also checked?
